Carlisle jumps

Jumps racing holds sway across the UK and Ireland on Sunday with three jumps meetings taking place across the afternoon as well as a flat meeting at the Curragh.

Cork gets the action under way before they then go at the Curragh, Carlisle and Huntingdon. Amongst our Sunday fancies is one for trainer Nicky Richards who will be looking to build upon a solid campaign last season.

13:32 Carlisle - Telepathique @ 11/10

the victor in four of her five starts last season, culminating with wins in the valuable Queen Boudicca Series Final at Fakenham and the Listed Lady Protectress Mares’ Chase at Huntingdon when last seen back in February.

In each of her starts she led from the front, jumped soundly and pulled clear in the closing stages.

The only blot on her copybook was finishing second at Warwick in December. On that occasion she just wandered around slightly approaching the last fence which took all the momentum from her.

Apart from that she has been virtually faultless and a dominant force in the Mares’ division who should continue to progress.

Telepathique will not want the ground to dry too much as she does her best work in softer conditions, but she sets the standard here and if she picks up where she left off last season she will be hard to beat.

13:48 Huntingdon - Greyval @ 5/1

After a reasonably successful hurdling career, Greyval switches to Chasing and her form toward the end of last season suggests she will be much more at home over the larger obstacles.

Back to back wins at Chepstow and then Cheltenham last spring showed that she has developed into a fine prospect. A change of tactics at Chepstow appeared to bring out the best in her as she was ridden more prominently and used her stamina to great effect to rally in the closing stages after being headed two from home.

Greyval followed that up with an equally impressive win at Cheltenham, putting in what can be considered a personal best, again using her stamina to great effect to out stay a challenge on the inside. It was a credible effort and one which suggests that fences will not be too much of a challenge.

Fergal O’Brien’s six-year-old should be match fit after a run on the flat in September and then contesting a hurdle race three weeks ago, and she looks set to go well.

14:37 Carlisle - The Kalooki Kid @ 11/2

Handstands sets the level in this race after impressive wins in some of the top Novice Chases last season. However he could be vulnerable after the summer break and carrying a penalty for his win in the Scilly Isles Novice Chase at Sandown in February, so the vote goes for the Nicky Richards-trained The Kalooki Kid.

He showed some great form last season, just narrowly beaten on his Chasing debut at Ayr before recording back to back wins at Doncaster and in the Scottish Champion Chase at Musselburgh.

On each occasion he set the tempo, and while it did not quite work for him at Ayr, he dominated the field in his back-to-back wins, jumping fluently throughout and pulling clear in the closing stages.

The Kalooki Kid did came unstuck on his last outing at Aintree, running as well as ever but finishing some way back in his first attempt at a Grade 1.

It was nonetheless a solid effort and there is cause to be optimistic here. He has shown that he has a lot of ability and could well improve now with some experience under his belt.

The seven-year-old has shown that he goes well fresh and now back down in Listed company he could spring a surprise.
