Chepstow races scaled

Sunday sees a good mix of Flat and Jumps racing across the UK and Ireland with four meetings taking place throughout the afternoon. First off is Cork before they go at Naas, Chepstow and Goodwood.

Amongst our horse racing tips for Sunday is one for trainer Sophie Leech who bounced back from a difficult summer last time out.

  • 15:45 Naas - Island Hopping @ 4/1

15:45 Naas - Island Hopping @ 4/1

Island Hopping has shown reasonably good form in some big races this season, including a third in the Irish Oaks and a second place in the Group 3 Give Thanks Stakes, but she has so far not been able to get to the finish line first.

She likes to lead from the front in her races but has been unable to see them out, often fading in the closing stages. However, these have been in Group 1s and Group 2s so Sunday’s drop down into calmer waters may help bring about a change in fortune.

In her two most recent starts conditions have seemed to be against her, as on both occasions she was running on soft ground, first at Galway and then at Longchamp, where the step up to 1m6f did not seem to suit her.

A drop back in trip to what seems her optimal distance of a mile and a half, as well as more favourable ground conditions and a move into Listed company should all contribute to her scoring a first win of the season at Naas.

15:52 Chepstow - Mount Tempest @ 7/1

Mount Tempest was switched to Sophie Leech earlier this year and put on a summer hurdling campaign in France, however, things did not go too well for him, as he put in a pair of uninspiring performances.

However, he put his dismal summer campaign behind him with an impressive win at huge odds at Worcester last time out when tried back over fences.

In what looked challenging conditions he kept himself in touch with the leaders throughout and jumped the final two fences superbly, pulling away from the field. Although he idled slightly in the run to the line he was always doing enough and very much looking back to his best.

He has only been put up 4lb for his win last time out and he looks well placed to go well again.

16:12 Goodwood - Poseidon’s Warrior @ 4/9

Poseidon’s Warrior put in an eye-catching run on debut at Haydock last month which suggests there will be more to come from him.

He was drawn widest and did himself no favours by ducking right out of the stalls, but the managed to put that behind him and he travelled well throughout the middle part of the race.

However, he showed signs of inexperience by hanging left in the closing stages, although he kept on well to take a respectable second place. There was plenty to like about his first run, he will have learned a lot from it and he very much looks the one to beat.
