The James Fanshawe-trained ALICE DE CLARE has improved markedly since switching to turf in handicaps this season and she may well prove up to defying a 9lb rise in the closing race at Leicester.
The three-year-old daughter of Space Blues did little to get the pulse racing in thee runs on the artificial surfaces early in the year, albeit showing improvement from start to start, as highlighted by her Racing Post Ratings of 18, 51 and 54.
Sent off at odds of 150/1 and 200/1 on her last two novice starts, she was only 10/1 on her handicap debut at Beverley in April and turned in a big performance to be beaten by just a neck by the heavily-backed favourite, Barbury Boy.
Alice De Clare was set a lot to do on that occasion, finding herself unpromisingly placed turning for home, and did well to make up the amount of ground she did in the final quarter of a mile under George Wood, pulling a notable six-and-a-half lengths clear of the third in the process.
Greenness may have played a part at Beverley, and she appeared to show the benefit of that experience when winning handsomely off the same mark at Yarmouth a week later, the three-year-old value for significantly more than the bare margin suggests.
That form has taken a few knocks since, but she could hardly have won with more authority and, although a 9lb hike makes life a little more difficult, she looks more than capable of proving up to the task, particularly with Oisin Murphy taking the ride on this occasion.
