NAP of the Day: Izzy Fast? Yes – and overpriced too

Nap of the day with owen mcmahon

It's been another difficult week on the tipping front, with no winners from three selections. Two finished runner-up but, as they say, second is the first to lose. Or whatever.

I'm eyeing a triumphant return to form on Saturday, with a double-figure NAP of the Day from Newmarket.

NAP of the Day - 16 May 2026

IZZY FAST? Yes, she is.

Philip McBride's four-year-old is by Richmond Stakes winner Land Force and a half-sister to former stablemate Priscilla's Wish, a winning sprinter rated 85 at her peak, so it's no great surprise that speed is her strength. The clue's in the name, and all that.

And yet, she debuted over a mile at Yarmouth in October before trying half-a-furlong further at Wolverhampton the following month - to no effect on both occasions.

Connections decided to run her over six furlongs back at Yarmouth last month, on reappearance from a 157-day break, which proved a treat as she obliged at an SP of 50/1.

Under a top jockey in Silvestre De Sousa, who maintains the partnership for this 0-80 handicap at Newmarket on Saturday, she gave weight and a beating to five rivals on the East Coast, getting up in the final strides to beat William Haggas and Wathnan Racing's three-year-old Creative Queen by a neck.

The runner-up, a €800k purchase handed a mark of 71 after her narrow defeat to the selection, franked the form by winning over course and distance earlier in the week, beating a relatively strong field in good style.

Nevasca Cinza was rated 81 and sent off odds-on before finishing third, over five lengths clear of the rest of the field, after making a decent start to life under new trainer James Fanshawe at Leicester a fortnight earlier.

Izzy Fast was conceding a whopping 11lbs to Creative Queen, who's going to be somewhere in the mid-70s once reassessed, and six to Nevasca Cinza, so I was surprised to see her rated just 72 for this handicap debut. That looks extremely lenient to me.

She's got to prove last time out wasn't a fluke, but I'm not worried about that. It's not as if she flew out of the gates and stole the race from the front - she was squeezed out at the start, ran a little free and was made to work for her victory.

If I'm right and what we're looking at is a much-improved horse who'd been running over the wrong trip, she's a huge price to go in again at HQ on Saturday and for that reason, she's my NAP of the Day.
