Nap of the Day: Sophia’s Starlight to strike again at Pontefract

There is lots of racing action to take in on Monday with five meetings across Britain and Ireland to start the week.

Afternoon action comes from Bath, Pontefract and Gowran Park on the Flat, as well as over jumps at Plumpton, while the evening fare on the all-weather is at Wolverhampton. Monday's Nap of the Day is bidding to gain a second success at Pontefract and may be primed to strike.

Class 2 fare from Pontefract comes via the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies' Handicap where a field of eight are engaged.

Last year's winner SOPHIA'S STARLIGHT is the only contender amongst them with a course and distance win on her CV.

The mare came into this race a year ago off the back of a success at Newmarket in September over 6f and she bounced out and made all to add this prize off a mark of 93, holding off market leader The Eyes Have It in second spot, with a yawning gap of more than six lengths back to the rest.

Grant Tuer's runner went up 5lb for that win to 98 and has failed to land a victory in six appearances since.

She has twice tackled Listed races either side of a winter break and ran again in that grade at Ayr last month.

In handicaps, she took in the Dash at York over 6f in July and then shaped with some promise again in a £25k Ripon sprint last month.

She raced isolated on the far side of the course that day and it was an effort that suggested she is close to returning to her best form.

The handicapper has dropped her another 2lb in the ratings for that effort and on paper this looks an easier assignment.

Oliver Stammers may look to employ front-running tactics again from stall four and his partner is up to the challenge of making it 2-2 at this Yorkshire venue.
