Lucky 15 Tips: Newcastle stage cracking eight-race card on Saturday

There's so much going on on Saturday - an absolutely fantastic feast of racing. We've got the ITV output wrapped up in a companion piece, and plenty of column inches on the Breeders' Cup from Del Mar, too - so I'm heading for the all-weather to Newcastle for an afternoon/early evening eight-race card on the Tapeta.
Paul Mulrennan's here, fresh from a thrilling assault on reaching the 100-winner summit for the year, and a whole host of the very best northern trainers. That'll do for me.
Lucky 15 Tips - Saturday, November 1
Newcastle
- 16:10 - Shamacid @ 7/4
- 16:45 - Bird Of War @ 9/4
- 17:15 - Macedonian @ 5/2
- 17:45 - Oriental Prince @ 17/2
*Odds correct as of the time of publication
16:10 - Shamacid @ 7/4
This three-year-old son of Shaman has been knocking loudly on the door of late in maidens and novice heats without quite being able to pop his head in front.
Shamacid is easily the most experienced in this novice stakes race and has shown enough ability, including on one outing here (beaten just over a length), to open his account.
Sean Woods trains at HQ, and Kieran O'Neill rides, for the first time.
16:45 - Bird Of War @ 9/4
The famous colours of Mrs Fitri Hay, and a two-year-old Starspangledbanner colt trained in Lambourn by Charlie Hills.
Bird Of War has run on five occasions, showing a reasonable, consistent level of form. He's been competitive in two recent nurseries and contests another here at a mile off a mark of 57.
I'd be surprised given this one's connections if he's a maiden for much longer. Kevin Stott gets the call to ride, for the first time.
17:15 - Macedonian @ 5/2
One of my favourite flat-racing combos - trainer Michael Dods and jockey Paul Mulrennan. Great pros that you definitely want on your side.
They're in tandem here with three-year-old Kodiac gelding Macedonian. Just one win so far from 13 starts, but last time here he very nearly made it two 18 days ago when finishing just a length shy of Raatea in a similar affair.
That was off 68 and his mark remains unchanged tonight. He was beaten a length at Nottingham off 70 in July so we're in striking territory all right - and tonight could very well be the night.
17:45 - Oriental Prince @ 17/2
We're with another wonderful pro now in the form of much-respected trainer Jim Goldie.
His Oriental Prince is a four-year-old Orientor gelding ironically also previously ridden on many occasions by the superb Mulrennan, but Jim pops 7lb claimer Lauren Young on top tonight.
By my reckoning she's had 19 winners so far in 2025 - two of which have come in the last 14 days equating to a very agreeable 22% strike rate over the fortnight.
For a handicapper the horse has a splendid seven-from-26 lifetime record and has dropped to a mark of 72 - the lowest since April and don't forget Lauren's claim on top of that.
Every chance in my book.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £388 for your total £7.50 stake.
