Among our Sunday fancies is one for trainer Ed Dunlop who has shown a lot of promise in novice company and who will be looking to build on that now on handicap debut. Read on for my horse racing tips for 5 July 2026.

14:32 Southwell - Anthropologist @ 13/2

Effective on the all-weather, ANTHROPOLOGIST has had a bit of a difficult time recently on the turf. His two runs this season on grass have produced very little and he has finished way back on both occasions.

However, a return to synthetics could be just what he needs to help get him back to winning ways. His record on artificial surfaces is much better with two wins and four places from 17runs.

His more recent efforts have been much better, a second place over this course and distance in March was followed up a week later with an impressive win at Newcastle, where he travelled strongly throughout and timed his run to the line perfectly to take the lead in the final half-furlong and put the race to bed.

He has a lot to prove after his recent turf outings, but crucially he is back on his last winning mark and the return to the all-weather could spark a revival.

14:50 Market Rasen - Crown Of India @ 5/1

In what looks set to be a closely fought contest the vote goes to the Alex Hales-trained CROWN OF INDIA, who has shown some good form of late and looks well placed to put in another strong performance.

After struggling somewhat towards the end of last year, he was put away and not seen again until May.

His reappearance did not go quite to plan but he can be forgiven that run after a near six-month lay-off and has been in good form since.

He put that disappointment behind him with an impressive win at Worcester. Following the leaders round most of the way, what was most eye-catching about the performance was the closing speed he had after jumping the last, making up three lengths in the final half-furlong to take the win in the final few strides.

He ran well in defeat last time out, once again sitting just off the leaders, however, a mistake at the second last this time around took all his momentum and he had to settle for second place. It was an unfortunate error and he could have gone one better with some more efficient jumping.

As a former Flat runner it is clear that he acts well on good ground, as some of his best work has been done in the summer months and has the speed to make up ground if needed in the closing stages. If similar tactics are used, he should go well again here.

17:00 Ayr - Bearish @ 6/1

Another tight contest but one who stands out is handicap debutant BEARISH, whose form in novice company has suggested that a mark of 82 may well be manageable.

He first caught the eye as a juvenile when belying big odds on racecourse debut at Newmarket to finish a very respectable fourth behind some who had a bit more experience than he did.

Ed Dunlop's charge looked to get a bit unbalanced in the dip on the Rowley Mile, but he rallied in the closing stages. It was a promising debut and one he would go on to build upon.

Next seen at Thirsk in April, he showed that any optimism after his run at Newmarket was justified by winning well. He raced prominently in the early stages and kept on well in the closing stages to take a well-deserved win.

He was upped in trip last time out and that appears to have been a bit too far and, while he still finished second, he faded in the closing stages.

Still learning, he has shown that inexperience does not affect his performance too much and the drop back to a mile should suit and he has a great chance here.
