HORSE RACING

Flat racing holds sway across Britain and Ireland on Sunday with five meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the early evening.

First off is Downpatrick, before they go at Doncaster, Gowran Park, Salisbury and Thirsk.

Amongst our Sunday fancies is one for trainer Paul Midgley who takes a drop in grade after a couple of eye-catching efforts and he can strike for a yard in great form. Below you can find my Sunday Racing Tips.

Horse Racing Tips - Sunday, June 16

  • 3.10 Doncaster - Sir Paul Ramsey @ 9/1
  • 4.00 Salisbury - Aysgarth @ 10/1
  • 5.10 Doncaster - Better @ 9/1

Horse Racing Odds

3.10 Doncaster - Sir Paul Ramsey @ 9/1

The Johnstons have won this 7f maiden three times since 2015 and have entered two newcomers into the contest this year. Silvestre De Sousa will take the ride on Middleham Park's Lazy Griff, who has a nice pedigree, and the market will tell the story with regards to his chances.

However, of the pair SIR PAUL RAMSEY is the one that we are interested in under Hector Crouch. The €90,000 yearling is a well-bred Sea The Moon colt, who is a half-brother to Royal Ascot and dual Group 2 winner Sandrine.

His pedigree suggests 7f is the ideal trip for him and Johnston horses tend to be forward first time out. Obviously with any newcomer it's wise to be cautious but he has a nice profile and is worthy of a small bet.

 4.00 Salisbury - Aysgarth @ 10/1

Trainer Clive Cox is a dab hand at improving a horse dramatically from first to second run, and with that in mind AYSGARTH is of interest in the 6f novice with John Fahy doing the steering.

The son of Showcasing made his debut at Ascot over 5f last month. He was given a good positive ride but only weakened inside the final furlong to be beaten about four lengths, running quite green but with plenty of encouragement at the same time.

Tapped for toe on that occasion, the step up in trip should suit and with the cobwebs blown away we might see a more mature performance now. He also has the experience edge over a few of his rivals which can count for a lot in these races.

5.10 Doncaster - Better @ 9/1

Finally, Paul Midgley's BETTER should be ready to strike in the 6f handicap at Donny. The stable have got the year off to a flyer with 22 winners on the boards already, which is some tally considering they netted 28 winners throughout the whole of 2023.

A winner at Wolverhampton in December, the Due Diligence gelding ran well in a 5f Beverley seller on stable debut last month, before running a more disappointing race in a 0-70 handicap at Ripon on soft ground at the end of the month.

Dropping into a 0-65 back on better ground should see Better run a much better race and he has also been dropped 2lb for his latest effort too.
