Saturday's racing tips features an improving four-year-old gelding who represents an in-form yard on York's Premier Raceday.

Saturday's Racing Tips

  • 13:50 York - Lord Melbourne e/w (5 places) @ 15/2
  • 14:05 Sandown - Terwada e/w (5 places) @ 11/1
  • 14:25 York - New Image @ 6/1

13:50 York - Lord Melbourne e/w (5 places) @ 15/2

LORD MELBOURNE is representing Ralph Beckett in this 18-runner, middle-distance handicap for female amateur jockeys at York.

Beckett is 8-43 in the past fortnight and 35-272 (13%) with his runners at York, and the booking of Miss Serena Brotherton in the saddle is worth noting.

Brotherton is 3-23 (13% +£12) when riding at York, and 2-7 (29%) when riding for Beckett.

Lord Melbourne can exploit a mark of 80, if finding some more progression as seems likely for this return to 1m4f.

The gelded four-year-old son of Wootton Bassett produced a peak Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 87 on his debut for Beckett over a slightly shorter trip at Epsom recently.

He rallied gamely and ran on into a relatively close fifth of 13 on that occasion, having overcome some traffic problems, and he makes plenty of each-way appeal on his first start at York.

This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred are paying 3 places instead of 2 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.

14:05 Sandown - Terwada e/w (5 places) @ 11/1

TERWADA also has good each-way claims in the 16-runner Class 2 1m handicap from Sandown, if continuing to go the right way this term.

The Tamayuz gelding left his disappointing Newbury reappearance effort behind, when said to be never travelling in April, with a much more encouraging about five lengths sixth of 12 back at the Berkshire venue the following month.

The four-year-old is representing an in-form Ed Walker, and Tom Marquand is renewing his association in the saddle. Marquand is 40-244 (16% +£35.93) when riding for Walker, and 30-214 (14% +£23.48) when riding at Sandown.

The selection need only tap into the pick of his ability last term to hold every chance. He dropped 2lb to a mark of 90 after that latest run but achieved an RPR of 102 when winning over 1m at Newmarket in July 2023.

This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred are paying 3 places instead of 2 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.

14:25 York - New Image e/w (5 places) @ 6/1

NEW IMAGE is the one to beat in the 20-runner 7f handicap at York, representing David O'Meara, and is yet another horse worth backing each-way on a day of big-field handicaps.

David O'Meara trained the winner of this race through Firmament (2019).

The four-year-old arrives 2-3 over this specialist 7f trip, coming clear towards the finish of a handicap on the AW at Southwell in April, before supplementing that success by winning going away from a 4lb lower rating on good ground at Musselburgh earlier this month.

The 3lb-claiming jockey Mark Winn continues in the saddle, which negates that subsequent rise to a large degree and that victory proved worthy of a 94 RPR, which already suggests his new mark of 88 is workable.

This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred are paying 3 places instead of 2 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.
