Nap of the Day: Saint Sam to land Peterborough prize

Nap of the day

Sunday is another cracking day for fans of National Hunt racing with quality aplenty in the three cards set to take place across Britain and Ireland.

In the UK, they race at Kelso and Huntingdon – with the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase the highlight at the latter venue – while in Ireland, the card at Cork is headlined by a cracking renewal of the Hilly Way Chase.

Sunday's NAP is a rare Huntingdon runner for Willie Mullins and could give the champion trainer a first winner at the track with Harry Cobden an eye-catching booking in the saddle.

15:00 Huntingdon - Saint Sam @ 10/3

The feature contest at Huntingdon is the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase over two-and-a-half miles, and a field of five is set to engage in battle for the £45k top prize.

The Venetia Williams-trained Djelo is top-rated and was installed as odds-on favourite when the market opened.

He won the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby over three miles on his seasonal comeback five weeks ago. The runner-up Pic D'orhy isn't the strongest stayer and has since been well beaten at Ascot, while the likes of Ga Law, Hewick and The Real Whacker underperformed in West Yorkshire.

Djelo won this race in good style a year ago but was defeated by a stronger stayer like Protektorat in second.

SAINT SAM only has 3lb to find on official ratings and Cobden takes the reins on this Mullins raider.

The former champion jockey went to Fairyhouse last weekend for one ride for the Closutton operation and could be set to get more opportunities for the biggest yard in jumps racing, when available.

Saint Sam is a hugely likeable and versatile sort. He's won six times over fences at trips ranging from 2m1f-2m6½f and has also pocketed some valuable prizes over hurdles.

When last spotted, he was second to the smart Found A Fifty Grade 2 company at Fairyhouse over Easter at this trip on soft going, with a bad mistake at the second last possibly costing him that race as he was denied less than a length at the post.

This speed-favouring track could be ideal for Cobden's partner if he gets into a good early rhythm and they can turn over Djelo and Hitman, the latter having won the Old Roan Chase at Aintree on his comeback seven weeks ago, but another for whom Saint Sam might just have too much toe at this stage in their careers.
