St. Joseph’s vs Shamrock Rovers Prediction: Visitors can take the lead in the tie

The Europa Sports Complex is the setting for the first leg of the Uefa Conference League second-round qualifier between St. Joseph's and Shamrock Rovers on Thursday (17:00 BST). The hosts navigated their way past Northern Irish side Cliftonville in the previous round with an aggregate score of 5-4, while Rovers enter the fray at this stage.

Team News

Following their progression through to this round against Cliftonville, St Joseph's boss Abraham Paz is likely to stick with the same starting lineup in a 4-3-3 shape. Pablo Rodriguez Moreno will lead the line for the Gibraltar-based side.

He scored 10 goals in eight league appearances in 2024/25, and he also netted in the second leg against Cliftonville. He should be once again joined in attack by Alvaro Rey, who bagged a brace in the first leg against the NIFL side.

Rovers manager Stephen Bradley usually goes with a 5-3-2 system, but against a limited opponent like St. Joseph's, he may tweak the team slightly for a 3-5-2, giving wing-backs the chance to get forward.

Graham Burke is their top scorer in the League of Ireland Premier Division this season with seven, while Michael Noonan, Rory Gaffney and Aaron Greene all have six apiece. Each of them will be hoping to feature in this European contest, and all should have a role to play in Gibraltar.

Burke and Gaffney were both on the scoresheet in Rovers' latest outing against Wexford in the FAI Cup, which they won 4-0.

Their first leg with Cliftonville in the previous round was a draw and the stalemate is priced at 5/2.

Shamrock Rovers have won four of their past six games in all competitions and they are the 4/6 (implied probability of 60%) to come out on top in Gibraltar.

Shamrock Rovers -1 handicap @ 15/8

After winning 4-0 against Wexford in their last match, Shamrock Rovers will head to Gibraltar with confidence, and the players will be pumped up for some European action as the club aims to reach the league phase of the Conference League.

The Hoops showed their squad depth and attacking quality in that cup win and their recent experience in Europe should serve them well on this occasion. Rovers made it to the round of 32 in the Conference League last season, losing out to Molde on penalties at home.

Bradley and his players know what it takes to progress at this level and I think they will prove too much to handle for St. Joseph's. As such, I think backing the visitors with a -1 handicap could be a shrewd selection, as it has been successful in five of their past 11 outings across all competitions.

Shamrock Rovers demonstrated their firepower against Wexford last time out and the attacking players head into this clash in good form. For that reason, I think we can expect goals in Gibraltar - at least four, anyway.

Over 3.5 goals has been a winning selection in each of St. Joseph's last three matches in all competitions, including both legs against Cliftonville in the first-qualifying round of the Conference League.

There have also been at least four goals scored in three of Shamrock Rovers' previous six fixtures across all competitions, and following their triumph over Wexford, and the points made in my first selection - I believe they will score the lion's share on Thursday.
