Group E in the Asian Cup reaches its conclusion on Thursday as South Korea take on Malaysia in Qatar, with kick-off at 11:30.

With four points from their two matches so far, South Korea will be hoping for a big win in order to top the group ahead of Jordan, as they take on already-eliminated Malaysia.

South Korea vs Malaysia Tips

  • South Korea to win to nil @ 4/5
  • South Korea -3 @ 13/5

Team News

Jurgen Klinsmann, (yes he really is South Korea’s manager), has a bit of an issue when it comes to his goalkeeper situation. First choice Kim Seung-gyu has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament and the foreseeable future having suffered an ACL injury in training.

Jo Hyeon-woo came in against Jordan and conceded two goals, as South Korea lost the defensive solidity that has previously served them so well. Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan also missed that encounter with a hip injury, and Klinsmann will be desperate to have one of his key men back for this one.

Meanwhile Malaysia have no such injury issues, but made four changes for their second game as they looked to find the winning formula. Changes could be made again here for what will be their final game at the Asian Cup.

Match Odds

As expected, South Korea are heavy favourites for this one, priced at just 1/7 to win this match. Malaysia are 14/1 for the win while a draw can be backed at 7/1. Over 2.5 goals is available at 2/5 while BTTS is 6/5.

South Korea to win to nil @ 4/5

South Korea are surely going to win this game, so these selections are about finding some value rather than just backing them to take all three points. Interestingly, picking them to win to nil looks to be a great shout, even though they have been slightly shaky defensively during this tournament.

They’ve conceded three goals over two matches, which feels like an outlier given they had only conceded two in their nine competitive matches played before the tournament began. Meanwhile, Malaysia have lost 4-0 to Jordan and 1-0 to Bahrain, registering just four shots on target across 180 minutes. They shouldn’t have the attacking quality to trouble South Korea here.

South Korea -3 @ 13/5

Despite their poor performance against Jordan, South Korea will fancy their chances of bouncing back in style here. They still managed to rescue a draw against Jordan last time out, and as a result, they can still top the group - but they will have to win big here. They are currently on +2 goal difference, while Jordan are on +4. Given Jordan are likely to beat Bahrain, but it may be a tight encounter, we can expect Son Heung-min and co to have to score plenty of goals against Malaysia.

The beauty of this pick is that they are not going to take their foot off the pedal at any point, given they will want to top the group and face an easier side in the knockout stages. Usually a -3 handicap feels like a big ask, but given the discrepancy in quality between the two teams here, and the fact South Korea will be chasing goals, I think 13/5 is a good price.
