Slovakia vs Austria Prediction: Close encounter expected between Euro 2024 hopefuls

Both Slovakia and Austria will play at this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament in Germany after impressive qualification campaigns, and the two teams meet for a friendly on Saturday afternoon (17:00) at the Tehelné Pole Football Stadium in Bratislava.

Below we have put together our Slovakia vs Austria predictions, featuring team news, match odds and a couple of betting tips for you to consider. 

Team News

Former Norwich City midfielder Ondrej Duda has become a key player for Slovakia over the past 12 months and he will start again here. Boavista striker Róbert Boženík is likely to lead the line again despite only scoring six times in the league this season, while 18-year-old Leo Sauer could be thrown in after making his breakthrough at Feyenoord this term. 

Meanwhile, Austria have a trio of RB Leipzig midfielders to choose from, with Xaver Schlager, Nicolas Seiwald and Christoph Baumgartner all included in their latest squad. Andreas Weimann has also been recalled to the squad after his loan move to West Bromwich Albion in January. 

Match Odds

This is a really even tie. Slovakia are priced at 7/4 to win, with the away side at 7/5. A draw can be backed at 21/10, BTTS is 5/6 and over 2.5 goals is 6/5.

I simply cannot split these two sides looking at the stats and form heading into this one. I feel like Betfred have priced this up well, and so I’ll be picking the draw as my first selection.

Austria have won their last three games without conceding a goal, including an impressive 2-0 win over Germany last time out. However, the Euro 2024 hosts aren’t the force they once were, and Leroy Sane was sent off just after half-time. Still, Austria have proved themselves to be a more than capable European outfit, and picked up 19 points in their qualification campaign and finished above Sweden, beating them home and away. 

Slovakia also qualified in second place, having picked up 22 points from their group matches. They only finished behind Portugal, and only lost to them home and away. Seven wins and one draw in their other matches mean they have a decent chance at the Euros this summer, and this will be a great yardstick to measure their progress with. I simply can’t separate them.

We’ve just mentioned that Austria have a great goal scoring record. They haven’t failed to score since they played France in September 2022, and since then, they’ve been able to find the net in every single match. 

Meanwhile, Slovakia have scored six goals in their last two games, and managed to score twice in Portugal, even though they ended up losing the game. I think both teams have enough to get on the scoresheet here, with a 1-1 draw at 5/1 also worthy of a shout.
