hillsborough sheffield wednesday

Forgive me if you are feeling a sense of deja vu here, but Sheffield Wednesday are indeed playing Coventry City again this Friday night.

Just six days after their second league meeting, and less than a month since their Boxing Day clash, Mark Robins and Danny Rohl will be sick of the sight of each other, and desperate to avoid a replay. Below we have previewed this clash and suggest a couple of betting angles for you to consider.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Coventry Tips

  • Coventry to win in 90 mins @ 5/4
  • Coventry to win both halves @ 6/1

Team News

Cameron Dawson is set to return in goal for Sheffield Wednesday as James Beadle, their new loan signing from Brighton who started their last league match, is cup-tied. Momo Diaby is likely to start to add minutes to his legs after his layoff, while Barry Bannan is likely to be rested given the huge amount of work he has got through in recent months. Dominic Iorfa, Jeff Hendrick, Juan Delgado and Callum Paterson remain out for the long-term.

Meanwhile, Coventry welcomed back Haji Wright to training this week, but this match on Friday night is likely to come too soon for the American international. Victor Torp could get his first minutes for the club after joining from Sarpsborg 08.

Match Odds

Sheffield Wednesday are 2/1 to win this game at Hillsborough, while Coventry are priced at 5/4 to win in 90 minutes. A draw is available at 5/2, BTTS is 4/6 and over 2.5 goals is 4/5.

Coventry to win in 90 mins @ 5/4

Here’s my weekly disclaimer that I am indeed a Coventry fan. Now that’s out of the way, it’s time to self-indulge, just a little bit. The Sky Blues have been absolutely sensational over the last six weeks, taking themselves from 20th to 6th after an unbeaten run of ten matches in all competitions.

Robins’ switch to a back four has worked wonders and only Southampton have picked up more points than Coventry over the last six matches. When you consider that the away side have beaten Sheffield Wednesday twice in the last two months already, and the fact Rohl is likely to make several changes that may weaken his side, I’m happy to side with the Sky Blues once more here.

Coventry to win both halves @ 6/1

6/1 feels like a big price for Coventry to win both halves, given they are favourites to win this game. They’ve scored four goals across two games against Wednesday so far, and importantly, one goal in every half of football they have played against Danny Rohl’s side. Ellis Simms is likely to start up front and he is a dangerous forward at this level, while Robins will want to avoid a replay at all costs.

I can see another impressive performance from this Coventry team, and even if they rotate, they now have the squad depth that means the performance level shouldn’t suffer. They’ve beaten Wednesday twice in quick succession -  6/1 for them to give them another footballing lesson feels like a price worth backing.
