Serbia vs England Bet Builder Tips: 11/1 for Three Lions win

England get their Euro 2024 campaign underway against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday night (BBC, 20:00), as Gareth Southgate hopes to win the opening game of a tournament for the fourth time in a row. The manager will be fully aware of just how important a win is here, as anything other than three points will cause the Three Lions serious difficulty in trying to get out of Group C.

England to win

Am I completely confident about an England win? No. Do I think they will just about get over the line? Yes. Southgate’s men are slightly undercooked heading into this tournament and with injury issues hampering his defence, I don’t think they will be solid at the back. 

Marc Guehi and Kieran Trippier are expected to play in place of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, while Trent Alexander-Arnold could be trusted to play in midfield alongside Declan Rice. The defeat to Iceland will have dented confidence, but it also could have helped England learn a few lessons. 

Going forward they are hopefully going to be quite dangerous, even if they leave gaps at the back. I think Harry Kane, Jude Belllingham and Phil Foden should have enough to get past Serbia. But it won’t be a comfortable evening on Sunday night.

England’s defence is a concern, and the Three Lions are coming up against two attackers with genuine quality, in the form of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic. They both know where the net is, and Serbia pose a huge threat from set pieces. Even though a clean sheet will be high on Southgate’s wish-list, I don’t think he will get it. 

Guehi hasn’t been tested in international football yet, while John Stones missed training with illness on Wednesday and may not be at his best, if he plays at all. I’m concerned for England this tournament, and while they should win this one, with a shaky defence, they are a decent price to concede in the process.

Harry Kane and Aleksandar Mitrovic to score

Let’s pick out the two most dangerous goalscorers on the pitch to find the net. Harry Kane is the top England goalscorer of all time, with a whopping 63 goals in 91 appearances. He has also produced on a regular basis at major tournaments, unlike big-name England strikers from the past. 

He won the Golden Boot in the World Cup in 2018 and will be targeting another successful campaign here. Getting off and running with a goal after an excellent goalscoring season with Bayern Munich would be the perfect start. 

Meanwhile, former Fulham striker Mitrovic is also deadly in front of goal. He is now playing in Saudi Arabia, and scored 40 in 43 games for Al-Hilal this season. He is so difficult to play against, for club and country, with 58 in 91 appearances for Serbia. Both of them can find the net in this opening match.
