Welcome to another fascinating weekend of action from north of the border, with competitive games broadcast live on television from Friday through to Sunday. There’s action from the Scottish Premiership as the chasing pack aims to make up ground with the top four in the division playing in the League Cup semi-finals. There’s also plenty to get excited about in the ever-changing Championship.
A busy weekend of fixtures is great news for accumulator players, and our resident Scottish football writer, Frank Monkhouse, offers his predictions. He’s picked three teams to win, with Betfred offering odds better than 8/1 on the treble for his Saturday Football Tips...
Saturday Football Tips - Scottish Treble
Hearts beat St Johnstone
We open our Scottish football Saturday treble at McDiarmid Park in Perth, where St Johnstone host Hearts. The home side start ninth in the Premiership after dropping points in eight of their first 11 games while conceding 23 goals.
St Johnstone has the worst defensive record in the league by a distance and that makes them easy to oppose. They lost 3-1 in Paisley on Wednesday and are likely to spend much of this season fighting the drop.
Hearts arrive rock bottom of the league, with their stats for the season so far showing one win, three draws, and seven defeats. A miserable start eventually cost manager Steven Naismith his position, but the Jambos now appear to be moving back on track under Neil Critchley.
They’ve taken four of the last nine points available, beating St Mirren 4-0 in the capital, drawing 1-1 with Hibs at Easter Road, and suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock in midweek. Hearts are showing signs of improvement and we back them to beat St Johnstone at a useful 9/10.
St Mirren beat Ross County
Our second and final pick from the Premiership comes in Paisley, where we’re backing St Mirren to beat Ross County. The hosts know victory over the Staggies could lift them into the top six after a valuable midweek win over St Johnstone at this venue.
They beat the Saints 3-1, ending a miserable run of four straight defeats. St Mirren are far from reliable this season, but they should be good enough to beat County.
The visitors are currently one place below their opponents in the pecking order, but both sides have 11 points on the board. Ross County ended goalless at home with Hibs three days ago but lost 3-0 at McDiarmid Park in their previous away game.
Saturday will provide fans with a competitive contest, but home advantage should make the difference and we add St Mirren at 5/6.
Hamilton beat Airdrie
Dropping to the Championship, we complete our Scottish treble with a bet on Hamilton to pile misery on bottom club Airdrie. Accies have won two of their last four and hammered Greenock Morton 3-0 at New Douglas Park last weekend.
Another victory would edge them closer to the playoff places, and we’re happy to place our trust in John Rankin’s men.
It has been a dreadful start to the season for Airdrie who finished fourth in the Championship last term but are currently bottom of the league after 11 games.
The Diamonds have managed just one win this term and kick off on the back of five defeats in their six most recent league games. The hosts are easy to oppose, and we do just that at odds of 13/8.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
