We got extremely close last weekend but Port Vale and Charlton played out a thrilling 3-3 draw, rather than the home win hoped for, while Colchester scored an injury-time equaliser at the County Ground to scupper us.

This week we have another fourfold priced up at just under 16/1 at the time of writing for our Saturday Acca Tips...

Saturday Accumulator Tips:

  • Back Birmingham City to Win in Birmingham City vs Swansea City @ Evens
  • Back Crewe Alexandra to Win in Crewe Alexandra vs Swindon Town @ 21/20
  • Back Doncaster Rovers to Win in Doncaster Rovers vs Newport County @ 23/20
  • Back Wrexham to Win in Wrexham vs AFC Wimbledon @ 9/10
  • Overall Odds - 15.74/1

Leg 1 - Birmingham City vs Swansea City - Home Win @ Evens

We start this Saturday’s fourfold searching for a new manager bounce, as Tony Mowbray has been installed as the new man at St. Andrew's, following a pretty disastrous spell in charge from former England striker Wayne Rooney.

Whether you believe the former manager was given enough of a chance to bring his philosophy to the team or not, the results certainly were extremely worrying, as were the noises coming out of the dressing room, where it appeared that his methods were not exactly popular within the squad.

The new man is a well-known and extremely experienced Championship manager in Tony Mowbray. Plenty of Sunderland supporters were unhappy that he was removed from his position there at the start of December. He should bring a bit of stability to a Birmingham side that started the season well, before the Rooney experiment was enacted by the new ownership.

I fully anticipate they’ll be solid and the atmosphere as well as the desire of the Blues players, will see the home side get the three points in his first game in charge.

Leg 2 - Crewe Alexandra vs Swindon Town - Home Win @ 21/20

Across the Football League last Saturday, only Cheltenham’s victory over Portsmouth was a more impressive result than Crewe Alexandra’s win on the road at Mansfield Town. The Stags went into the game having been unbeaten at home through their first 11 games of the season in front of their own supporters.

Lee Bell’s side head back to Gresty Road sitting squarely in the play-off places and sporting one of the best home records in the division. They face a Swindon Town side who were outstanding early-on in the campaign but who have fallen by the wayside in recent months and now look like a mid-table side at best.

When I saw the price for this game, I was extremely surprised. I fully expected Crewe to be odds-on considering their good home form, coupled with the fact the visitors come into this one having lost their past three on the road.

This looks like a regulation home win, although it also has BTTS and Over 2.5 potential. I could easily have made this one of those rare games that makes it into all three Saturday acca columns but upon further review, I've passed on this one in both of those accumulator pieces this week.

Leg 3 - Doncaster Rovers vs Newport County - Home Win @ 23/20

In isolation, this looks like a pretty fair price for a game between the 19th and 18th placed sides in League 2. Neither are in great form and both look likely to stumble towards the end of the season not in any danger of going down but on the flip-side, not finishing even in the top-half of the table.

However, there is one massive reason why this game features in the Saturday accumulator and why I think it is one of the better plays on the coupon.

Newport County have an FA Cup Replay on Tuesday night against Eastleigh. That would usually cause a minimal effect on my thoughts heading into a game such as this but after the Fourth Round Draw, the winner of that game gets to face Manchester United at home, in what surely would be a live TV game and be one of the biggest matches in the history of either club.

Graham Coughlan might not come out and say it openly but surely he’ll be resting up players to ensure his side have the best available side to face their non-league opposition on Tuesday night, to win what would be a money-spinning date with the Red Devils.

Quite simply, for that reason, I’m plumping for a big home win.

Leg 4 - Wrexham vs AFC Wimbledon - Home Win @ 9/10

Following that opening day shock to the system, when MK Dons went to Wales and put five past the home side in a 3-5 victory, the Hollywood-owned club haven’t tasted league defeat in front of their home supporters.

Since the end of September, they have played seven matches at the Racecourse Ground in the league and they’ve come away with the full haul of three points each time. No-one has a better record at home than Phil Parkinson’s side, having dropped only seven-points from a possible 39 so far this campaign.

This weekend does see one of the better sides on the road make the long journey from London but we are now firmly at the stage where the Red Dragons should be considered a play in any acca when they are playing at home. When they are getting only just-shy of Evens, they are a slam dunk.
