West Ham vs Manchester United Prediction: Sesko can save the best until last

Michael Carrick continues his prodigal son tour this Tuesday, February 10 as he takes his buoyant Manchester United to former club West Ham United in the Premier League. The former midfielder orchestrator has just seen off another of his old haunts, presiding over a 2-0 United victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday lunchtime.

Can the ex-Red Devils number 16 make it five wins in a row? Will that idiot with the afro really chop it off and sacrifice his facile and fleeting social media notoriety if United do win? All this and more in the West Ham vs Manchester United predictions.

West Ham vs Manchester United Betting Tips

  • Manchester United to score in both halves @ 6/5
  • Benjamin Sesko last goalscorer @ 9/2

Team News

The Hammers will be without suspended defender Jean-Clair Todibo. New boy Axel Disasi, on-loan from Chelsea, is expected to fill in as he did in the 2-0 win at Burnley.

It is likely Nuno Espirito Santo will go unchanged from that vital victory at Turf Moor. This will mean a reunion with the Red Devils for old boy Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Ageless wonder Callum Wilson is a shoo-in up-top while red-hot winger Crysencio Summerville can continue a fine of form out wide.

United midfielder Mason Mount’s woes are showing signs of abating. A consistent performer under Ruben Amorim, the England playmaker was sidelined with a minor injury ahead of the Fulham game and was unable to play against Spurs. But interim manager Carrick said ahead of the latter game that Mount is “not too far away” from a return.

The visit to the London Stadium will, however, come too soon for Patrick Dorgu. The miscast wing back-turned-roving winger is out with a thigh problem. He’s joined on the treatment table by Matthijs de Ligt (back). I wonder if they lie side-by-side or top-and-tail.

West Ham vs Manchester United Predicted Lineups

  • West Ham: Hermansen; Wan-Bissaka, Mavropanos, Disasi, Diouf; Soucek, Potts; Bowen, M. Fernandes, Summerville; Castellanos
  • Manchester United: Lammens; Dalot, Martinez, Maguire, Shaw; Mainoo, Casemiro; Diallo, B. Fernandes, Mbeumo; Cunha

West Ham vs Manchester United Odds

Carrick’s men are 8/11 favourites to take all three points back to Sir Matt Busby Way. Sorry, just getting mentioning Carrick and Busby in the same sentence over with before someone else does.

The Hammers are 10/3 for the victory. After brushing the brink, West Ham have won four of their last five games in all competitions. The draw is marketed at 16/5.

West Ham Vs Manchester United Stats

  • West Ham have conceded late goals (75th minute onwards) to nine different Premier League teams this season
  • Bryan Mbeumo has three goals in four games since returning from representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations
  • Nuno Espirito Santo is a pleasing tripartite. The Portuguese coach has five wins, five losses and five draws against the Red Devils

Manchester United to score in both halves @ 6/5

Goals are perhaps United’s most improved facet this season. Last season’s 15th-placed finish saw the Old Trafford side score just 44 goals. The 16th-worst total in the Premier League. This term they have already surpassed that total, netting 46 goals in 25 games. Only Arsenal (49) and Manchester City (51) have scored more.

United have scored at least one goal in each half in their last three games. Against the third-worst defence in the league, with 46 conceded, I’m backing United to have success either side of the break.

Benjamin Sesko to score last @ 9/2

There is a chance Carrick opts to start the towering Benjamin Sesko given the quick turnaround from Saturday’s win over Spurs. But I reckon the searing-hot form of Bryan Mbeumo will be favoured from the outset.

Sesko has come off the bench in three of Carrick’s four games in charge this season. The Slovenian has been under the microscope this season due to a hefty price-tag and big reputation. But a lovely take in the 3-2 win over Fulham showed a growing confidence.

Chelsea, Fulham, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Burnley, Brentford and Sunderland have all scored goals against West Ham after the 75th minute this season. That is the sort of time Sesko is usually introduced and I can see the striker adding Manchester United’s name to that list.
