After further European Championship Final heartbreak on Sunday, Gareth Southgate has called time on his tenure as England Senior Men's National Team Manager.

Attention now turns to who will replace the 53-year-old, who has presided over England's most successful era this century. Will the FA continue down the English path, with Graham Potter continually touted for the role, or will they revert back to a foreign coach, a la Sven-Goran Eriksson? Below you can find the next England manager odds, and an assessment of the most viable contenders to the throne.

Selected Next England Manager Odds

  • Graham Potter @ 6/4
  • Lee Carsley @ 3/1
  • Eddie Howe @ 9/2
  • Mauricio Pochettino @ 8/1
  • Thomas Tuchel @ 10/1
  • Jurgen Klopp @ 10/1
  • Frank Lampard @ 20/1
  • Pep Guardiola @ 20/1
  • Jose Mourinho @ 33/1
  • Carlo Ancelotti @ 40/1
  • Sarina Wiegman @ 50/1
  • Emma Hayes @ 50/1
  • Gary O'Neil @ 50/1
  • Sean Dyche @ 50/1

Graham Potter @ 6/4

The bookies favourite, Graham Potter, has been out of a job since being sacked by Chelsea in April last year.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion head coach won plenty of admirers for his work with the Seagulls, playing an attractive brand of football that had the south-coast side fourth in the Premier League at the time of his departure in September 2022.

As an out-of-work Englishman who has been praised for his style of play, Potter ticks key criteria, so it is no wonder that he heads the list of candidates to replace Southgate.

However, the struggles he endured at Stamford Bridge is one black mark against him, as he is yet to truly establish himself at the elite level, working with world-class players.

Lee Carsley @ 3/1

Potter certainly has more experience than the second favourite, England Men's U21s head coach Lee Carsley, who has never been named permanent manager of a senior side.

But if the FA have judged Southgate's tenure as a successful one, why not go for a man who has trodden down a similar path?

Unlike Southgate, Carsley has won a major international tournament with the U21s side, leading them to success at the European U21 Championship last summer, beating Spain 1-0 courtesy of a Cole Palmer strike.

Like Palmer, Carsley has worked with several other players already established in the England senior team, in addition to the likes of Curtis Jones and Jarrad Branthwaite, who are expected to make the step up permanently soon.

The question many supporters will have, though, is whether he is 'just another Southgate'. Some may see that as a positive, someone who can work closely with young players, but many others are likely to view his potential appointment as underwhelming.

Eddie Howe @ 9/2

Could the Newcastle United head coach walk before he's pushed? Eddie Howe has done a fine job at St. James' Park since succeeding Steve Bruce in November 2021, steering the Magpies to safety before overseeing a top-four finish in his first full season in charge, bringing Champions League football back to the North East for the first time in 20 years.

However, Newcastle finished bottom of their Champions League group last season and missed out on European football this year after finishing seventh. Suddenly, Howe's position doesn't seem quite so secure, and they still look a long way off challenging the likes of Manchester City for the top honours.

Howe fits the profile of manager the FA are seemingly seeking, and he would likely be a popular appointment with supporters. Certainly, the fact his Newcastle side scored 85 Premier League goals last season - behind only Man City (96), Arsenal (91) and Liverpool (86) - piques interest, as fans call for more excitement at international level.

Persuading Howe to leave the riches of the Toon Army may be difficult, however.

Mauricio Pochettino @ 8/1

The highest-ranked foreign coach in the list, Mauricio Pochettino is well regarded on these shores having achieved success - of sorts - with both Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

Things didn't go to plan at Chelsea, where he was relieved of his duties in May, but the less said about the Blues and the way they have gone about things, the better.

Pochettino still has a fantastic reputation in England and earned huge praise for tutoring the likes of Harry Kane and Dele at Spurs.

Appointing the Argentine may not go down well with the traditionalists, however, and it remains to be seen whether the FA will go back in for a foreign manager after the disaster that ensued under Fabio Capello.

Thomas Tuchel @ 10/1

Another foreign contender, Thomas Tuchel departed Bayern Munich in May after losing out on the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen, though he did oversee a run to the Champions League semi-finals, where they narrowly lost out to eventual champions Real Madrid.

Like Pochettino, Tuchel is well thought of in England and has the type of charismatic personality that could charm the public.

He is also prone to an outburst and can be tetchy. Whether his abrasive nature rubs well with the FA bigwigs, is unclear.

Jurgen Klopp @ 10/1

Probably the ideal appointment for most supporters - even those of an anti-Liverpool persuasion - Jurgen Klopp as England manager feels more like a pipe dream.

The German exited the Reds in May after suggesting he was burnt out and was desperate for a break.

Anyone even remotely tuned in to social media will have seen Klopp has embarked on some sort of summer European tour, taking in a Taylor Swift concert, Tennis in Mallorca, and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Ed Sheeran and Stormzy at Euro 2024.

A beaming smile has barely left his face, and tempting him out of his sabbatical feels highly unlikely.

Besides, Klopp looked desperate to leave the English press behind, so it's doubtful that a role which places him at the top of their hit list would be of any interest to him.

Interestingly, the first three bets on this market were all on Germans - Tuchel, Klopp and Julian Nagelsmann.

Pep Guardiola @ 20/1

Another star name in the next England manager odds list, Pep Guardiola would demand instant respect among players and supporters alike.

The biggest issue, though, is that he is already in situ in City, where he is paid very lucratively for the success he brings. Does the Spaniard really want to move away from the day-to-day coaching he so enjoys, winning multiple trophies every season, to having a shot at one title every two years with England?

File this one under 'very, very unlikely', too.

Jose Mourinho @ 33/1

If he hadn't taken up the Fenerbahce job earlier this summer, you can guarantee Jose Mourinho would feature higher up in the next England manager odds.

As it is, I can't see him leaving Istanbul already, and like Guardiola, it seems the three-time Premier League champion prefers the constant nature of club football, rather than the slow-paced international scene.

Sarina Wiegman @ 50/1

Appointing Sarina Wiegman as the next England Men's national team manager would be quite something - certain people might well self-combust.

There has never been a woman in charge of a top division side in England, let alone the national team job, so it would be a huge move to appoint Wiegman to the role, though she is the only person to take a senior England side to success at a European Championship.
