After beating reigning champions Manchester City in convincing fashion on Sunday, Premier League leaders Liverpool will be seeking another three points when they travel to St James' Park to take on Newcastle United on Wednesday (19:30, Prime Video).

The Reds head into the midweek round of fixtures with a nine-point buffer at the top of the standings, while, after taking one point from their previous two games, Newcastle sit in the bottom half, albeit just four points off the top four.

Newcastle United vs Liverpool Stats

  • Newcastle sit 12th in the Premier League form table (last six matches)
  • The Magpies have failed to win any of their last 15 matches against Liverpool
  • Liverpool have won 18 and lost only one of 20 matches under Arne Slot
  • The Reds are on a six-game winning streak against Newcastle

Form Guide

Newcastle sit 12th in the form table, winning two and losing three of their last six fixtures in the league.

The Magpies went into the November international break off the back of three successive wins against Chelsea in the EFL Cup and Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in the league, but since then they have lost at home to West Ham and drawn at struggling Crystal Palace.

Liverpool have won 18 and lost only one of their 20 matches across all competitions since Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp as head coach over the summer.

The Reds are top of the Premier League form table and have won seven matches in a row across all competitions, while they have scored two or more goals in each of their last eight games.

Head-to-head

This will be the 188th competitive meeting between these two sides, with Newcastle registering 50 victories, Liverpool 93 and there have been 44 draws.

Liverpool have dominated recent head-to-head encounters, winning each of the last six clashes, while Newcastle are without a victory in their last 15 meetings with the red half of Merseyside.

Newcastle's last win in the fixture was a 2-0 success at St James' Park in December 2015 when a Martin Skrtel own goal and a strike from future Liverpool player Georginio Wijnaldum was enough to earn them the victory.

These two sides have thrown up some classic encounters over the years, notably back-to-back 4-3 wins for Liverpool at Anfield during the 1990s - who can forget Collymore closing in?

Goals

Newcastle have scored just 14 goals in the league this season, only four teams - Ipswich, Crystal Palace, Everton and Southampton - have a lower tally.

The Magpies have also failed to score in two of their last three home games in the league, but they have only let in 14 goals, the same amount as second-placed Arsenal.

Liverpool came into the midweek round of fixtures having scored 26 goals across their 13 Premier League games, with only Tottenham (28) having netted more in the division.

The Reds have only failed to score once this season - September's 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest - and they have netted at least twice in each of their last eight games in league and cup.

Mohamed Salah is Liverpool's leading scorer this season with 13 goals across all competitions, 11 of which have come in the Premier League, while the Egyptian has netted in each of his last six top-flight games.

The league leaders also boast the best defence in the division, conceding just eight times in 13 matches.

Cards

Newcastle have picked up 31 yellow cards in the Premier League this season, with defender Dan Burn having received five of those.

The Magpies have also been shown one red card, which was picked up by centre-back Fabian Schar on the opening weekend of the season against Southampton.

Liverpool's tally of 26 yellow cards is the third lowest in the division, with only Merseyside rivals Everton (21) and Brentford (18) having received fewer. The Reds are also yet to have a player sent off.

Ibrahima Konate, who is currently out injured, and Alexis Mac Allister are the Liverpool players that have received the most cautions, picking up four apiece.

Fouls

Newcastle have committed 146 fouls in the Premier League this season, two fewer than Liverpool, but it is a Magpies player who has been penalised more than any other, with Joelinton having given away 29 fouls on his own.

Ryan Gravenberch has committed the most fouls for Liverpool with 20.
