There's a peculiar look to the Premier League fixtures this week, as we have only five games to get stuck into, courtesy of the Premier League's new 'mid-season player break'. On Saturday evening, Newcastle United host the champions Manchester City in an intriguing looking game, which we've previewed and given you two of our best betting tips for the occasion.

Newcastle vs Man City Betting Tips

  • Man City to win and BTTS - 15/8
  • Julian Alvarez to score first (DD/HTH) - 7/2

It's post Christmas, so of course that means Manchester City are on a charge. It's not the first time as my colleague Nick Ware investigated recently.

Three wins in their last four have seen the Cityzens climb into second spot in the table, five points adrift of leaders Liverpool, but with an all-important game in hand. With their title rivals and Villa hit by the AFCON and Asian Cup tournaments, Pep Guardiola will see the next few weeks as a prime opportunity to claw some of that ground back.

Standing in their way on Saturday, is a banged-up Newcastle side that just seem to lurch from one injury crisis to another. That has been reflected in their recent Premier League form, losing five of their last six in the competition and have dropped to the unthinkable lows of ninth spot.

There have even been murmurings on Tyneside about the future of Eddie Howe's position but the heavy defeat of bitter rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup third round won't have harmed his prospects of keeping the role.

Team news

Howe is still nursing a big injury list, with as many as 10 first team players unavailable for the visit of City. Joelinton will need to be assessed after limping out of the Stadium of Light last weekend.

It remains to be seen whether Erling Haaland will be back in the squad for this big game but Guardiola could be tempted to give him some part in the game, with two weeks to rest afterwards. Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku both returned from injury in the 5-0 demolition of Huddersfield and could feature from the start here.

However, Bernardo Silva and Kalvin Phillips have both been rocked by illness and are a doubt to feature here, along with John Stones who has been ruled out till the end of the month with a niggling injury issue.

Match odds

Newcastle are big 9/2 outsiders to win this one in front of their own fans, with Manchester City a heavily favoured 8/15 shot. The draw is backable at 16/5, should you fancy a stalemate.

Goals are fancied for both sides with BTTS at 4/6 and over 2.5 goals even shorter at 4/7.

Man City to win and BTTS - 15/8

City are the big favourites to win this one and rightly so. Whereas their squad seems to go from strength to strength, United are battered and bruised and badly need those two weeks of rest following this match.

However, Newcastle continue to carry a threat and have scored in seven of their last eight games in all competitions. They should be able to notch at least a response for the St James' faithful.

Julian Alvarez to score first (DD/HTH) - 7/2

The 23-year-old added to his increasingly bulging medal collection last month, with the addition of the World Club Championship, to go along with his World Cup winning medal.

Everything the Argentine touches seems to turn to gold right now and that's certainly the case with his recent form, filling in admirably for the crocked Haaland.

Alvarez has five goals and an assist in his last four games and is red hot currently in front of goal. I can see that trend continuing on Saturday teatime.

Betfred are running their popular Double Delight/Hat-Trick Heaven Promotion on this match, meaning that if Alvarez scores first and then bags a second, you will be paid at double the odds (7/1). If he then goes on to net a hat-trick, you will receive treble the odds (21/2).
