Manchester City vs Club Brugge: Citizens to dig deep for the result they need

It's crunch time for Manchester City in the Uefa Champions League as they currently sit outside the play-off places. A win against Club Brugge at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday (20:00, TNT Sports 2) would secure their place in the play-offs, but with a collapse at Paris Saint-Germain last week, this is going to be a nervy 90 minutes for the Citizens.
The visitors are above them in 20th, and their goalless draw with Juventus last time out has put them in a strong position to go through to the play-offs, and a stalemate here would be enough for them. Read on for my Manchester City vs Club Brugge prediction, aided by the latest match odds and team news.
Manchester City vs Club Brugge Betting Tips
Manchester City vs Club Brugge Odds
Despite winning just two of their seven European fixtures so far, Man City are the 1/6 favourites to win this clash, with the home advantage likely playing its part.
The hosts have conceded in each of their last four matches in this competition, so backing them to win and both teams to score at 6/4 (which carries an implied probability of 40%), is a lot more attractive.
Man City and Club Brugge have both experienced two draws apiece in the Champions League thus far, and the stalemate is available at 7/1 on Wednesday. The visitors have won just one of their three trips away from home, which is why they are 14/1 to come away with the three points.
BTTS has been a winning selection in four of the last five matches held at the Etihad in all competitions, and it is marketed at an alluring 1/1 this time around.
Team News
Oscar Bobb has returned to light training for Manchester City following a leg fracture before the season started. Pep Guardiola spoke positively about his progress two weeks ago, and he is expected to be back in contention in the next couple of weeks.
Rodri remains sidelined with his ACL issue, while Ruben Dias (abductor), Jeremy Doku (unspecified) and Nathan Ake (muscle) are all set to miss Wednesday's clash.
City's new signings Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis are ineligible to play during the league phase, but they can be registered to feature in the knockout stage, should the 2023 champions get there.
John Stones is likely to partner Manuel Akanji in the heart of defence, with Josko Gvardiol continuing as the left-back. Rico Lewis will compete with Matheus Nunes for the opposing role on the right flank.
Savinho and Kevin De Bruyne will be pushing for starts after being benched against Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday, with the former not making it onto the pitch at all.
For Club Brugge, captain Hans Vanaken is a doubt to make the trip after suffering with an illness that ruled him out of the draw with Kortrijk on Saturday.
Maxim De Cuyper, a player being monitored by Arsenal, is set to return to his usual left-back berth at the Etihad. Former Norwich City attacker Christos Tzolis will operate on the left wing, and another familiar face, Simon Mignolet, is set to play in between the sticks.
Man City and both teams to score @ 6/4
Heading into the 2024/25 campaign, no one would have envisaged Man City failing to make it past the league phase of the Champions League but as things currently stand they are on the cusp of a premature exit.
They were left bitterly disappointed with their collapse in Paris, especially after being two goals to the good. It's left them with a lot to do in their final match, which they will be thankful is on home turf, and they simply have to beat their Belgian opponents to avoid this embarrassing scenario.
I touched on earlier how BTTS has been a winning bet in each of the Citizens' last four European encounters, so I think this selection is worth combining with a home victory on Wednesday night.
Club Brugge can certainly provide Guardiola's men with some problems as they have surprised many with their performance in the Champions League this season. The pressure is of course on City, and the nerves could play into the visitors' hands here, so I do fancy them to get on the scoresheet at the very least.
However, City have more than enough quality to get the job done, with the focus on top scorer Erling Haaland, who has six goals in seven in this competition, and Phil Foden, who has hit form in recent weeks.

Phil Foden anytime goalscorer @ 5/4
The England international has taken his time to get back to his best, after a very slow start to the season, but the 2023/24 Premier League Player of the Season looks to be back following some stellar performances in recent weeks.
Foden has six goals in his last four Premier League appearances, so he is a man full of confidence right now. He has also struck three times in the Champions League this term, with one coming at the Etihad against Sparta Prague.
In such a crucial match in City's season, I'm expecting one of their biggest attacking stars to stand up and deliver.
