Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad Preview:
Real Madrid have the opportunity to go top of La Liga on Saturday night. They'll be expecting a tough match against a Real Sociedad side that has made a stunning start to life under their new boss Pellegrino Matarazzo.
An early exit in the Copa del Rey has given Los Blancos the rare luxury of two free midweeks heading into this match. Despite their struggles in cup competitions, Real Madrid are currently on a seven-game winning streak in La Liga. That has brought them right back into the title race.
A 2-0 victory at Valencia was their latest triumph last weekend. In a relatively uneventful contest, left-back Álvaro Carreras' solo strike broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, before Kylian Mbappé fired in his 38th goal of the season in all competitions to seal the three points late on.
Despite their strong league form, there is still little sense that this is a convincing Real Madrid side. Moments of individual quality, most frequently from Mbappé, are getting them over the line, but Álvaro Arbeloa has failed to solve any of the underlying issues that contributed to Xabi Alonso's downfall.
The new man appears to have settled on a 4-4-2 system. He has moved Fede Valverde back into midfield, with youngster David Jiménez getting the nod at right-back last time out. The fit-again Trent Alexander-Arnold will be hoping to take that position over the coming weeks, with Dani Carvajal currently out of favour altogether, or so it seems.
Real Sociedad have reason to fancy their chances of being very competitive. However, fatigue could be a factor after they played the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final against Basque rivals Athletic Club on Wednesday night. La Real won that game 1-0 in Bilbao, and are now clear favourites to progress to what's likely to be a final against Atlético Madrid in April.
Their season has completely turned around since the appointment of Matarazzo. The American coach was a virtually unknown name in Spain when he took the job, but the ex-Stuttgart boss has not lost any of his opening nine fixtures.
That run has not only taken Real Sociedad to the brink of a cup final, but has turned a potential relegation battle in La Liga into a European push. Only Real Madrid have picked up more points than them over the last five matchdays.
As good a job as Matarazzo has done, there is also an element of the Basque side having underachieved over the previous 18 months. They can still count on the services of Mikel Oyarzabal, the regular forward for a dominant Spanish national team. Summer signing Carlos Soler is also a proven performer in this league, and has added a touch of quality in midfield.
The club also continues to churn out young talent via one of the best academies in Europe. Where possible, they always look to promote from within. That process has continued this season following homegrown Martín Zubimendi's departure to join Arsenal, which has served up opportunities for academy products Jon Gorrotxategi and Beñat Turrientes.
Team News:
Real Madrid have had a scare over Mbappé this week, with the Frenchman not training fully due to a knee problem. He is expected to be available for this game, but Arbeloa must decide whether it's worth risking his top scorer 72 hours before a key Champions League match away to Benfica.
Vinícius Júnior will return from suspension up front, but Rodrygo remains an injury doubt. The hosts will also be without the injured Jude Bellingham and Éder Militão.
As for Real Sociedad, there may be some changes following their cup exploits on Wednesday. However, they are not in action this coming midweek, so Matarazzo is expected to mostly stick with the players that have delivered for him until this point.
Midfielder Brais Méndez completes a two-game suspension following a recent red card. The visitors are also missing the injured Take Kubo and Luka Sučić, while wingers Ander Barrenetxea and Gonçalo Guedes are additional fitness concerns.
Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad Lineups (Predicted)
- Real Madrid: Courtois, Alexander-Arnold, Asencio, Huijsen, Carreras, Valverde, Tchouameni, Camavinga, Brahim, Mbappe, Vinicius
- Real Sociedad: Remiro, Odriozola, Martin, Caleta-Car, Gomez, Gorrotxategi, Turrientes, Marin, Soler, Guedes, Oyarzabal
Match Odds:
Real Madrid are the 4/11 favourites to win this game. You back the Draw at 4/1, while Real Sociedad are on offer at 13/2 to leave the Santiago Bernabéu with maximum points.
You can back Matarazzo to extend his unbeaten start by going with Real Sociedad or Draw in the Double Chance market at odds of 15/8. Both teams to score is on offer at 4/6.
If you're expecting Los Blancos to make it eight wins on the bounce in La Liga, you can get bigger potential returns by backing the hosts to win to nil at 6/4. Real Madrid to win and Over 2.5 goals is priced at 4/5, while you can back Arbeloa's side to score over 2.5 goals at 11/10.
Mbappé is the most obvious candidate to get on the scoresheet whenever Real Madrid play. He's priced at 15/8 to score first, and 4/9 to score anytime, although his fitness issues suggest this may not necessarily be the best weekend to back the forward.
Alternative options include Vinícius, who is priced at 23/20 to score anytime. Arda Güler is available at 2/1 in the same market, while in-form Oyarzabal is priced at 15/8 to grab a goal.

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad Stats
- Kylian Mbappe is the only player in La Liga to average over five shots-per-match (5.08).
- Real Madrid have been awarded the most penalties in La Liga this season with 11.
- These are the two form teams in La Liga - with only one draw and nine wins between them in each of their last five matches.
- Real Sociedad have only kept out 66.7% of Shots on Target - the second-lowest percentage in La Liga.
- Neither team have saved a penalty so far this season.
Bet 1 - HT/FT - Draw/Real Madrid @ 16/5
Real Madrid have tended to leave it late to score their goals since the change in the dugout. They've been drawing at half-time, but leading at full-time in three of their four league matches so far under Arbeloa. Even struggling teams like Levante and Valencia have held form until the interval.
With Real Sociedad in such brilliant form, this will not be an easy game for Los Blancos, and there's a strong chance they go in level at the break once more. However, the visitors may start to tire in the second half, just 72 hours on from a huge cup match. They're not in Europe this season, and don't really have the squad depth needed to significantly freshen things up.
That points to the home team eventually getting the job done, and I'm backing Draw/Real Madrid in the HT/FT market at 16/5.
Bet 2 - Under 3.5 goals & Vinícius Júnior 1+ shots on target @ 13/10 via Bet Builder
With doubts over whether Mbappé will play the full 90 minutes, a refreshed Vinícius should have a big role to play. He hasn't featured for a fortnight and has had a poor season overall, which has led to him being jeered in recent home matches.
However, there have been signs that the Brazilian may be getting back towards his best level in 2026. He has scored in each of Real Madrid's last two fixtures at the Bernabéu, with a dazzling display against Monaco in January his best in a long time.
Real Sociedad are likely to set up relatively conservatively, and Real Madrid's recent league games haven't been high-scoring affairs. Nine of their last 10 have ended with three or fewer goals. Given that, I'm using the Bet Builder to back Under 3.5 goals and Vinícius to have 1+ shots on target at 13/10.
