Match Preview:
Two teams that appear to be heading in opposite directions clash in La Liga on Monday night. A resurgent Girona are hoping to pile on the misery for Getafe, who have slipped into serious relegation trouble.
Back in September, it was the home team that looked set for a long, hard fight for survival. Girona started the campaign by taking only one point from their opening five matches, with 15 goals conceded. A woeful 4-0 home defeat against newly promoted Levante might have prompted many clubs to make a managerial change.
However, Míchel is a popular figure at the Catalan club, and he was given the time needed to turn things around, aided by some late moves in the summer transfer market. Vladyslav Vanat, Azzedine Ounahi and Àlex Moreno all completed switches to Montilivi after the season had started, and have gone on to play key roles in turning the fortunes of the Blanquivermells around.
2026 has been particularly good to Girona so far. They've won all three matches since the turn of the year, with two Vanat penalties sealing a 2-0 derby win away to Espanyol last time out.
They've made another significant move over the past week, by signing Marc-André ter Stegen on loan from neighbours Barcelona. The German is keen to play football as he targets a World Cup place, and he'll be hoping to get the nod over Paulo Gazzaniga in goal for Míchel's men.
Getafe's need for fresh blood is even more urgent. They've picked up just one point from their last six league games. That has seen an unlikely European push turn into a relegation scrap, in what is a very congested middle section and bottom half of La Liga.
The South Madrid outfit rank as the worst team in the Spanish top flight with their tally of just 16.9 xG, while only Real Oviedo have scored fewer goals. Since a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture against Girona in October, they've netted just three goals in nine league outings.
With top scorer Borja Mayoral sidelined until at least March, they're in a desperate situation in terms of their lack of attacking options. Their ability to make moves in the transfer market has been hampered by the lack of opportunities Christantus Uche is getting at Crystal Palace.
The Nigerian left Getafe to join the Premier League club in an initial loan deal in the summer, with the Spanish outfit expecting to receive £17m when a modest appearance clause was met. However, with Uche yet to start in the English top flight, Los Azulones have not received any money for the 22-year-old, and as a result are in no position to make any major permanent signings this month.
They have at least got some loan deals over the line, with Luis Vázquez and Martín Satriano bringing two new options in the final third.
Team News:
Girona's revival has come about despite some significant selection issues. Donny van de Beek, Christian Stuani, Portu, Abel Ruiz, and Azzedine Ounahi will all miss this game due to injuries, while Axel Witsel is an additional doubt. Arnau Martínez and Lass Kourouma also serve suspensions.
Ter Stegen and fellow new recruit Fran Beltrán have both been registered with La Liga, and are in contention to make their debuts.
Getafe's financial situation has so far prevented them from registering new loan addition Sebastián Boselli. However, Satriano is available to play and should continue up top after playing 90 minutes on his debut in the 1-0 defeat to Valencia last time out.
Apart from the sidelined Mayoral, the visitors are also missing young defender Davinchi to a long-term injury. They have additional fitness doubts over Abdel Abqar and Abu Kamara.
Girona vs Getafe Lineups (Predicted)
- Girona: Gazzaniga, Rincon, Reis, Blind, Moreno, Beltran, Martin, Tsygankov, Lemar, Gil, Vanat
- Getafe: Soria, Iglesias, Dakonam, Duarte, Rico, Munoz, Arambarri, Milla, Martin, Satriano, Liso
Match Odds:
Girona are the 11/10 favourites in the Match Result market to extend their winning streak. Getafe are priced at 3/1, while the Draw is on offer at 2/1.
You can also back the hosts to win to nil at 7/4 against a misfiring Getafe side. Girona are also priced at 13/8 to score over 1.5 goals in the game.
Both teams to score is on offer at 5/4, while you can back the visitors to score at some point in the match at odds of 8/11. Getafe are priced at 7/5 to win either half in a fixture they won 2-1 last season.
The most obvious goal threats in this match will be lining up for the hosts. Vanat has already struck seven times in La Liga since making his deadline day move, and he's priced at 7/2 to score first or 13/8 to score anytime on Monday night. Alternative options in the Anytime Goalscorer market for Girona include Viktor Tsygankov at 12/5, and Bryan Gil at 9/2.
Midfielder Mauro Arambarri has chipped in with some useful goals for Getafe in recent months, and he's available at 9/2 to score anytime. You can also back Luis Milla to assist a goal at 6/1 in the Bet Builder, tempting odds given his tally of seven assists in 19 league appearances this term.

Girona vs Getafe Stats
- Getafe have secured just one point from their past five games, the worst run of form in La Liga.
- These two sides have the lowest average attendance in Spain's top-flight.
- They have only scored 35 times between them through 20 rounds of matches.
- Both clubs have identical Clean Sheet percentages of 20%.
Bet 1 - Girona to win @ 11/10
A quick look at the form book would suggest that this is a game that Girona should win. Despite a lack of squad depth as a result of their current injuries, Míchel has done a good job of constructing a settled starting lineup that won't be lacking confidence heading into this match.
By contrast, Getafe look devoid of belief in the final third, and are lacking any sort of regular attacking threat from open play. Milla's set-piece deliveries could potentially ask the odd question, but this could be another frustrating evening for Satriano, who was far from prolific for parent club Lyon in the first half of this season.
At odds of 11/10, Girona look to offer good value to extend their 100% start to the new year.
Bet 2 - Viktor Tsygankov 1+ shots on target & Vladyslav Vanat 1+ shots on target @ 7/5 via Bet Builder
Ukrainian duo Vanat and Tsygankov have helped spark life into Girona's season. The latter is one of the few survivors of the wildly successful 2023/24 team that finished third, and he's returned towards his best level of late, with key goals contributing to impressive away wins against Real Sociedad and Mallorca.
Meanwhile, Vanat has netted four times in three outings so far this year, with the 24-year-old settling relatively quickly into life in Spain. On current form, he's the player most likely to find a breakthrough in this clash.
With an unconvincing Getafe side likely to operate in a defensive manner, both players should get shooting opportunities. I'm using the Bet Builder to back Tsygankov 1+ shots on target and Vanat 1+ shots on target at 7/5.
