Espanyol vs Real Oviedo Preview:
Espanyol are still awaiting their first victory of 2026. They won’t get any better opportunity to put three points on the board than a home game against rock-bottom Real Oviedo, who are firmly on course for relegation from La Liga.
The hosts enjoyed a brilliant first half of the season, which saw them wildly exceed all expectations. Manolo González’s side excelled from set-piece situations and kept it tight at the back as they gatecrashed the top five to mount an unexpected European challenge.
There was always a sense that their great form would not last, but their demise since the turn of the year has been every bit as spectacular as their initial rise. The Pericos have picked up just three points from nine matches, since beating Athletic Club 1-0 away in their final game of 2025.
The main difference has been the cracks that have suddenly appeared in their defence. The Catalans have conceded 2.44 goals per 90 minutes this calendar year, compared to exactly one goal per game prior to that. There have been no significant personnel changes or defensive injuries, so Manolo will be scratching his head at the scale of the turnaround.
Espanyol’s long wait for a win did come very close to ending last time out. A fifth strike of the season from their talented left-back Carlos Romero put them 2-1 up at Elche, in a game marred by allegations of racism made by Omar El Hilali against Rafa Mir. The latter went on to score the decisive penalty for Los Franjiverdes in the 90th minute, which ensured the points were shared.
Despite their poor run, Espanyol do remain in contention for a European place, and their problems certainly don’t compare to those of Real Oviedo. The visitors are propping up the table with only 17 points, and it’s very hard to see how they survive from this position.
A 3-0 defeat in a rearranged game against Rayo Vallecano in midweek felt like the final nail in their coffin. The Asturians were furious when the initial fixture was called off due to problems with the pitch at the Estadio de Vallecas. Rayo were in poor form at the time, and Oviedo pushed to have the points awarded to them, but their appeals were rebuffed and they put in one of their worst performances of a difficult campaign last Wednesday.
Prior to that, improvements were evident under the guidance of Guillermo Almada, their third coach of the season. A 1-0 victory over Girona in January offered a glimmer of hope, but all too often they’ve competed well only to concede late goals.
Oviedo spurned a lead to lose 2-1 at home to Athletic in their next match, while they then wasted a two-goal advantage in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Real Sociedad. A 94th-minute strike from Julián Alvarez was the only goal in their last home match against Atlético Madrid.
Team News:
After a heated clash with Elche, Espanyol are missing two players to suspension on Monday night. Edu Expósito and Charles Pickel are the two to miss out, while Manolo may consider other changes.
Javi Puado is the only definite injury absentee for the hosts. They also have a fitness doubt over back-up winger Antoniu Roca.Real Oviedo will be missing four players due to injury. The sidelined quartet are David Costas, Thiago Borbas, Leander Dendoncker and Lucas Ahijado.
Almada has been relatively consistent with his team selections until this point, but he may also think about changes after a poor showing in Madrid last week. Fede Viñas has been in good form and should continue up top, while Ilyas Chaira and Haissem Hassan are expected to offer the wide threat.
Espanyol vs Real Oviedo Lineups (Predicted)
- Espanyol: Dmitrovic; El Hilali, Calero, Cabrera, Romero; Lozano, Zarate; Dolan, Terrats, Milla; K Garcia
- Real Oviedo: Escandell; Vidal, Carmo, Calvo, Lopez; Fonseca, Sibo; Hassan, Reina, Chaira; Vinas
Espanyol are the 9/10 favourites to claim their first victory of 2026. If you can’t see that happening, the Draw is on offer at 23/10, while Real Oviedo are priced at 16/5.
Both teams to score has landed in all of the last six Espanyol matches and it’s on offer at 1/1 here. You can also back the home team to score over 1.5 goals at 11/10, while they are priced at 21/10 to win a game with over 2.5 goals in total.
Alternatively, you can back Real Oviedo to score over 1.5 goals at 3/1, while the visitors are on offer at 6/4 to win either half.
Kike García and Roberto Fernández are the two main options up front for Espanyol. The duo have been used together at times, but Kike started and scored last time out. That suggests he’ll continue in this match, and the ex-Middlesbrough striker is priced at 4/1 to score first, and 6/4 to score anytime. You can also back Englishman Tyrhys Dolan to grab a goal at 3/1.
From a visiting perspective, Viñas is the most likely threat. The Uruguayan has scored four goals in his last eight appearances, and he’s on offer at 11/2 to score first, and 9/4 to score anytime.
Espanyol vs Real Oviedo Stats
- 65% of the goals Real Oviedo have conceded have come in the second half
- All of Espanyol’s last 10 games have also served up at least two goals
Bet 1 - Second half result - Espanyol @ 5/4
Espanyol have scored twice in each of their last three matches, which suggests they should have enough firepower to see off the division’s bottom club. They have some good options in attack, while the likes of Dolan and Pere Milla have impressed at various points this season in the wide roles.
It looked like the fight had finally been knocked out of Oviedo as they succumbed to a heavy defeat last week. Their tendency to collapse in the latter stages of games has also significantly contributed to their struggles this term. 65% of the goals they’ve conceded have come in the second half, while the Asturians have let in 12 goals after the 75th minute.
With Espanyol netting 70% of their league goals after the interval, I’m backing the hosts in the second-half market at odds of 5/4.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Bet 2 - Over 1.5 goals & Espanyol over 4.5 corners @ 20/21
This match has the potential to be better than might be expected given the poor form of the two teams. Oviedo have nothing to lose now, and need to throw caution to the wind and chase victories, as draws will not be enough to keep them in the league. They are looking more threatening than was the case earlier in the campaign, with Viñas lively up top.
All of Espanyol’s last 10 games have also served up at least two goals, and they’ll certainly be gunning for three points here. Despite a poor start to the new year, they are still in a good position in La Liga and they ought to have the better of this game at the RCDE Stadium.
Oviedo are averaging 6.92 corners conceded per away match in the league. Taking that into account, I’m using the Bet Builder to back Over 1.5 goals and Espanyol to have over 4.5 corners at 20/21.
