Football bet of the day

The quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup come our way this midweek, but on Wednesday my attention goes north of the border as struggling Celtic return to Scottish Premiership action with a trip to Dundee United (20:00 GMT, Sky Sports Football).

Former St Mirren player James Goodwin will have been delighted to see his former side triumph over Celtic in the League Cup final, and will be hoping for a victory of his own on Wednesday night. This game takes our focus for Wednesday’s Football Bet of the Day.

Football Bet of the Day - Wednesday, December 17

Dundee United vs Celtic Odds

Making the choice to side against Celtic is hardly going to come as a surprise to anybody who has seen them play in recent weeks. Wilfried Nancy has had a nightmare start to life at Parkhead losing his opening three matches in charge - kicking off with a home defeat to Hearts, before losing 3-0 to Roma and then, getting outplayed by St Mirren on Sunday.

He’s the first Celtic manager in history to lose his opening three games in charge and already, some sections of the fanbase have seen enough. ‘The Celtic Bhoys’ website wrote a pretty scathing assessment of his time in charge, saying:

Nancy looks like a manager completely out of his depth at Celtic. He has shown zero ability to adjust to the situation, sticking to a system that has failed him time after time. Even more importantly, it looks like he has little understanding of the expectations at Celtic. Nancy looks lost and out of his depth.’

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Celtic have lost all three matches under new boss Wilfried Nancy
  • Dundee United have drawn their last two home matches

Nancy, who joined from Colombus Crew in MLS, also came under fire for his post-match comments after that defeat in the final. He said:

"Of course, the results matter. I have to see beyond the results. I have to see what we need to get a better and a complete performance. It’s totally normal that they are questioning a bit of me. But I showed that I can do better. I showed the direction I want to go. This is part of the job.”

Results really do matter at Celtic, and they have to improve sharpish. However, I just cannot get behind a team in such poor form, with a manager who hasn’t shown anything in the dugout so far. Instead on Wednesday, I’m going to back against them by tipping Dundee United or Draw at a decent price.

Dundee United haven’t scored in their last two outings, but they have drawn their last two home matches, against Motherwell and Rangers. They are a competitive team having drawn eight times this term, and although I can completely understand Celtic being 2/5 - I am keen to back against them at that price.

I don’t trust Celtic, and Nancy has plenty to prove. Another defeat could leave him staring down the barrel, but I think even a draw won’t quieten the noise surrounding Glasgow Celtic right now. Double Chance - Dundee United or Draw is our Football Bet of the Day at 13/8
