Germany vs Curacao Prediction: Germans set for swift start in Houston

Four-time champions Germany take on debutants Curacao, the smallest nation to appear at the World Cup, in the opening game of Group E at the Houston Stadium in Texas on Sunday (12pm local, 6pm BST, live on ITV).

Unsurprisingly, Germany are big favourites at 1/25 to claim all three points on Sunday. That's an implied probability of 96%.

Curacao are 33/1 (just 3%) to cause a seismic shock, while the draw is 14/1.

The Germans to win to nil? That's a much more attractive 4/9.

Team News

Manuel Neuer is expected to start in goal for Germany. Immediately in front of him is likely to be a back four made up of captain Joshua Kimmich, Jonathan Tah, Nick Schlotterback and Nathaniel Brown.

A midfield two of Felix Nmecha and Aleksandar Pavlovic, perhaps, to anchor the dynamic trio of Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz in the midfield. Kai Havertz is set to lead the line.

For Curacao, Eloy Room will provide security between the sticks, in all probability with a back five ahead of him. Sherel Floranus, Armando Obispo, Riechedly Bazoer, Jurien Gaari and Shurandy Sambo are the likely types.

A midfield of Livano Comemencia and Bacuna brothers Leandro and Juninho is as close as it gets to a certainty, while Manchester United academy graduate Tahith Chong and Jurgen Locadia can provide going forward.

Germany to be winning after 20 minutes @ 21/20

I'm backing Germany to make a swift start to this World Cup.

After failing to make it out of the groups in Russia and Qatar, they've got a lot to prove in North America, and Julian Nagelsmann's side has a golden opportunity to hit the ground running.

Curacao are ranked 82nd in the world and 2000/1 outsiders at Betfred to go all the way this summer. It's also their maiden appearance on the biggest stage of all, so the occasion could get to them.

The Germans, no doubt cool, calm and collected, will be looking to put this one to bed as early as possible, with one eye on the tough tasks ahead against Ivory Coast and Ecuador - a couple of dark horses for the competition.

So, I think the best bet in a fixture where value is at a premium is to back the former champs to be leading after 20 minutes. There's more than enough quality in their ranks to envisage that happening. Easily.

Leandro Bacuna to be carded @ 19/10

The Bacuna brothers are crucial cogs in Curacao's engine room, and I couldn't put you off backing either one ending up in the referee's notebook on Sunday.

They're going to be put through the wringer by the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane - all of whom attract plenty of fouls.

Cards are expected and Leandro and Juninho are the major suspects as far as I'm concerned.

Statistically, there's nothing to split the pair, but on account of his age (34) and tendency to sit deeper, I'm going for the skipper, Leandro.
