Football Bet of the Day: The Buddies bid for Premiership survival

Football is firmly ensconced in the business end. With titles, relegations and promotions being decided all across the beautiful game, I’ve pared Monday’s action down to a single bet. Aren’t I a treasure? So take a look at my top tip from St Mirren vs Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership play-offs (8pm, Sky Sports Main Event & Football).

St Mirren vs Partick Thistle Odds

The Scottish Premiership play-off is a nailbiting concept. The second-to-fourth placed Championship sides duke it out for the chance to meet the second-bottom Premiership side. The victor plays in next season’s top flight, the loser competes in the second tier. Ruthless.

It is an interesting dichotomy compared to England’s traditional play-off structure. While the English variation finds a selection of teams who have had impressive seasons battling it out, Scotland stirs in a team who have struggled in the Premiership. The momentum usually associated with a squad competing in a final is not present, but the Premiership participant is better-resourced and sharpened by top-division football.

The final is a two-legged affair and this season’s participants, St Mirren and Partick Thistle, played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg. This essentially designates Monday evening’s game as a straight-up final in the traditional sense.

Partick Thistle were the best of the rest in the Championship, finishing second to champions St Johnstone. You have to go back to the Scottish Cup quarter finals in early March to find their last defeat in all competitions. Their opponents in that 2-1 reverse? St Mirren.

That match, as well as their closely-contested first leg, informs my Football Bet of the Day. I like St Mirren to exercise their greater squad-wide quality to find a way through. These teams have met twice this season and have each scored in both outings. So the 11/4 shout for a St Mirren win with BTTS is my fancy.
