Football bet of the day

We’ve got action from across the continent coming our way on Friday night, but as usual, my focus turns to the EFL Championship where a fascinating battle for second is taking place.

Millwall will want to put the pressure on the other contenders as they travel to face West Brom on Friday (20:00 BST, Sky Sports Main Event). Below you can find my Football Bet of the Day.

West Brom vs Millwall Odds

The Championship’s race for second is really hotting up.

Millwall, Middlesbrough and Ipswich are all tied on 72 points, while Southampton are keen to push themselves into the automatic promotion picture having hammered Wrexham 5-1 on Tuesday night.

The Lions looked to have dealt Boro a knockout blow on Good Friday with a 2-1 win at the Riverside, but couldn’t follow it up as they lost 2-1 to in-form Norwich City at the Den. However, I don’t think it was a particularly poor performance from Alex Neil’s men, but instead a wonderful showing from Philippe Clement’s seemingly unstoppable Canaries.

As a result, I am surprised to see the side currently sitting fourth at such a big price as they travel to relegation-threatened West Brom. It’s true that the Baggies have improved under James Morrison as they have climbed out of the bottom three and they are unbeaten in their last six.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Millwall have won five and drawn one of their last six away games
  • West Brom are unbeaten in six

However, four of those have been draws, including a frustrating 0-0 at Blackburn Rovers last time out. A win there would have taken them close to survival but as it stands, they are just four points above the drop zone and not out of danger.

Millwall’s away form has been better than their home form of late and they have taken some big scalps against other sides pushing for the Premier League. They’ve picked up 36 points on the road, the joint-most in the division along with Coventry and Middlesbrough, but their recent form has been astonishing.

Of course they beat Boro away on Good Friday, and prior to that they took a point away from Portman Road. It’s five wins and one draw in their last six away trips, which includes a 3-1 away win at Hull and a 2-0 win at Wrexham - two teams with promotion hopes of their own.

Their last away defeat came at champions-elect Coventry, and they arguably should have taken at least a point from the CBS Arena. This is a big price for Neil’s men to continue their superb away form, and heap the pressure onto Ipswich and Middlesbrough before they play on Saturday.

Millwall to beat West Brom on Friday night is my Football Bet of the Day at 11/5.
