Football Bet of the Day: Points record in sight for Blues

We’ve got another Champions League semi-final coming our way on Wednesday night as Barcelona face Inter Milan in a repeat of the 2010 semi, but once again, I’ve turned my attention to the EFL in search of some value. 

The regular season all comes to a close this weekend, but there is a League 1 fixture taking place at 19:45 on Sky Sports+ that we will take a look at. Find my Football Bet of the Day down below.

Birmingham City are on course to break the EFL points record this season and it really looks like there is no stopping them. After the disappointment of losing the Vertu Trophy final to Peterborough United at Wembley, the Blues have bounced back, picking up 10 points from their last four league matches. 

There’s no doubt that they are the best team to have ever played at this level, and they are set to record the highest points total we have ever seen over an EFL league season. They are now on 105 points and a win on Wednesday would take them beyond the 106-point record set by Reading back in 2005/06. 

It’s a simply insane season that has seen Chris Davies’ men win 32 out of 44 matches, conceding just 30 goals in the process. I’m going to back a party on the beach in Blackpool for Birmingham on this early summer evening, given their quality and what is at stake for them with just two games to go. 

Blackpool sit in ninth but cannot make the play-offs, and with nothing to play for I can’t see them disrupting Birmingham too much. It seems as though the Blues are a top-half Championship club playing in League 1 this season, and it doesn’t really matter who they come up against. They should be able to dominate this game and although the Tangerines held them to a 0-0 at St Andrew’s earlier in the campaign, I can’t see history repeating itself.

In fact, I’m also going to add over 2.5 goals to our selection in order to boost our odds. Blackpool have been one of the most profitable teams in the over 2.5 goals market in League 1 this term with 66 per cent of their 44 matches ended with three goals or more. That figure goes up to 71 per cent for games at Bloomfield Road while it has also been a successful selection in five of their last six.

I’m happy to get onside with over 2.5 because of Birmingham’s immense attacking quality that has seen them score 80 goals so far in 2024/25. Over 2.5 goals has landed in six of their last eight league games, so let’s back them to win an entertaining encounter. Blackpool may find the net, but even if they don’t, I can see Davies’ men landing blows at will as they celebrate this incredible season.
