England boss Thomas Tuchel is certainly not going to be spoilt for choice when it comes to midfield options when selecting his 2026 World Cup squad. There are a lot of talented players who will be itching to represent the Three Lions in North America.

Some spots may already be guaranteed, but there may still be some wriggle room for some with a lot of time to pass before the squad has to be picked. Mason Mount is someone who will be hoping to force his way into consideration. Below I take a look at his chances of getting the call.

One thing that is certainly only going to help Mount's cause is that he has a previous professional working relationship with Tuchel. The pair spent 20 months together at Chelsea between January 2021 to September 2022.

In Tuchel's brief stint at Stamford Bridge, Mount was a fixture in his side, having played in 87 of the 100 matches he was in charge for. They won the Uefa Champions League together in that period, too, at a time when Mount did appear to be at the peak of his powers.

Mount scored 19 goals and 20 appearances during the time working with the England boss, which is the best return of his career to date. Things have not been going so well for him in recent years since leaving the Blues for Manchester United, as he has found his Old Trafford career blighted by injuries.

Today's Football Fixtures

The midfielder is back in the first-team picture right now and he is hoping that this will be the time where he can maintain fitness and play a key role for the Red Devils in 2025/26.

While he may hold credit in the bank for his previous deeds under Tuchel at Chelsea, he will need to replicate a similar output this season to really boost his chances of going to the World Cup.

Mount has made 12 appearances in the Premier League so far this season and he is just five shy of equalling his best total in a Man United shirt so far (17, 2024/25). And with three goals already in the top flight, he has already accomplished his best attacking return in the league for the Red Devils, but he will need to do a lot more to get himself back into the England fold.

His latest goal was an impressive volley at Molineux against Wolves and people are starting to wonder if Mount is about to undergo a resurgence, especially as he has now scored two in three games.

The Qatar World Cup in the winter of 2022 was the last time he appeared in a Three Lions shirt and it does seem like a lot has happened since then.

The 26-year-old will have his work cut out for him between now and the end of the season because he will need to deliver consistent performances - which is difficult given the club he does play for - as well as ending the campaign with an eye-catching total for both goals and assists.

The Daily Mail reported that the way that United play under Ruben Amorim is hurting Mount's chances in Tuchel's eyes, but there's still a long way to go before decisions have to be made and a couple of injuries could suddenly push Mount up the pecking order.

We know that at his best, Mount could be a useful creative asset for the Three Lions to have at their disposal but Tuchel does have a choice when it comes to those types of profiles, in the likes of Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers.

It'll be tough for Mount to get himself back into the picture, but not impossible.
