Qatar

Three games, three defeats and seven goals conceded, that was how Qatar's 2022 World Cup finished, thus statistically becoming the worst-ever hosts in the history of the tournament.

They are back for another shot, but will there be a different outcome? Former Spain and Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui is now in the dugout, having been appointed in May 2025.

Qualification, however, didn't quite go to plan. Qatar could only finish fourth in Group A, meaning they would have to finish top of a group containing Oman and UAE in the next round.

Under Lopetegui, Qatar won four points out of six to secure a place at the 2026 finals.

A 0-0 draw against El Salvador in their final friendly match wasn’t the best preparation and the odds are against them making it out of a group containing Bosnia, Canada and Switzerland.

Switzerland

Qualifying for the World Cup and European Championships is now the norm for Switzerland, as this will be the eighth consecutive major tournament for the nation.

In Germany two years ago, the Swiss reached the quarter-finals of the Euros, missing out on a place in the semi-finals in heartbreaking fashion after losing a penalty shootout to England.

As such, this World Cup represents a perfect opportunity for Murat Yakin to lead his country deep into the tournament.

At USA 1994, Switzerland advanced to the last-16 and that will surely be the aim this summer. Should Yakin's men reach that stage, then who knows what can happen.

With veterans including Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo and Manuel Akanji, Switzerland have a strong spine to the team, so don't be surprised if they cause an upset or two in North America.

Qatar vs Switzerland Key Players:

Granit Xhaka (Switzerland)

This will likely be Xhaka's World Cup swansong as the midfielder turns 34 in September. Since making his debut for his country in 2011, Xhaka has played in six major tournaments, scoring at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a superb season with Sunderland and he remains the figurehead in midfield under Yakin.

He has been in fine form in front of goal for his country in recent months. Across his last seven games, Xhaka has scored three goals and provided two assists. Yakin will be hoping for more of the same at the World Cup.

Akram Afif (Qatar)

Akram Afif has made 128 appearances for Qatar, scoring 40 times, while the winger has also won two AFC Player of the Year awards.

At the 2023 Asian Cup, Afif finished the tournament with eight goals, helping Qatar to win their second continental title and that included a stunning hat-trick in the final.

Afif did fail to score or assist at the 2022 World Cup, however, something which he will be looking to remedy this time around. He could be the difference between a group-stage exit or qualification for the knockout phase.
