Both Teams To Score - Yes
The Netherlands have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their four friendlies this calendar year, beating Norway and Uzbekistan by 2-1 scorelines, either side of a 1-1 draw with Ecuador and a 1-0 loss to Algeria.
Ronald Koeman’s side recorded five shutouts in eight World Cup qualifiers, but the vulnerabilities in their back line were horribly exposed in one game by Lithuania, who scored twice in a valiant 3-2 defeat to the Oranje.
Japan have a few forwards who can hurt the Netherlands, chiefly Feyenoord striker Ayase Ueda, who struck 25 times in 31 Eredivisie appearances last season.
The Samurai Blue have scored in their last seven games, drawing the first before winning the next six. The first of those victories was a 3-2 success over Brazil last October, while they famously beat England 1-0 at Wembley in March.
Player 1+ Shots On Target (Sub Switch) - Cody Gakpo (NED)
Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo registered two shots on target in each of the Netherlands' warm-up games against Algeria and Uzbekistan, bagging a brace from the penalty spot in a 2-1 victory over the latter.
The 27-year-old averaged a shot on target per game in qualifying and scored in all three of his country's group games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Gakpo was also prolific at Euro 2024, scoring three times in six games, including two goals in the group stage, and he recorded five shots on target across those three matches pre-knockouts.
Player 2+ Shots (Sub Switch) - Virgil van Dijk (NED)
Gakpo's skipper at club and international level, centre-back Virgil van Dijk, is backed to shoot at least twice on Sunday.
The 34-year-old averaged 0.8 shots per game in the 2025/26 Premier League season, recording a couple of efforts in two of his final three matches, and one of them included a brace in a 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa.
Van Dijk's 6ft 5in frame makes him a huge threat from set-pieces, and in World Cup qualifying, he averaged 1.2 shots per game, shooting 2+ times in half (four) of his eight appearances.
Japan aren't the tallest team at the tournament, with only one of their three centre-backs projected to start on Sunday above 6ft, and that's the 6ft 2in Tsuyoshi Watanabe.
The Samurai Blue conceded three shots to England's starting centre-backs, Ezri Konsa (one) and Marc Guehi (two), in their March Wembley victory over the Three Lions, and Thomas Tuchel's 83rd-minute replacements for the duo, Harry Maguire (three) and Dan Burn (one), recorded four shots between them in their brief spells on the pitch.
Player 2+ Fouls (Sub Switch) - Junnosuke Suzuki (JPN)
With Japan skipper Wataru Endo announcing his withdrawal from the squad, and subsequent retirement, on the eve of the tournament, a lot of pressure will now be piled on the shoulders of SC Freiburg's Yuito Suzuki and Crystal Palace's Daichi Kamada in the middle of the park.
Suzuki, who averaged 0.8 and 1.4 fouls per game, respectively, in last season's Bundesliga and UEFA Conference League, will be tasked with containing the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Frenkie de Jong on Sunday.
Gravenberch averaged 1.2 fouls won per game in the 2025/26 Premier League (1.5 p/g in the UEFA Champions League) and was upended three times in the Netherlands' latest friendly against Uzbekistan, while De Jong averaged 1.1 fouls won per game in La Liga.
