This is arguably the most controversial England squad we have seen in the last decade. Gareth Southgate was not only very good at dealing with the press, but also picking uncontroversial squads that included the best players.
Tuchel has gone the other way, taking a hammer to the tried and tested and including some shock names. He’s also tried to strike the balance between form and quality, but there are a few questionable decisions.
Harry Maguire has not only had a good season for Manchester United this term, but has been a wonderful servant for England since 2018. He was a rock for Gareth Southgate and only missed the last Euros through injury. Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah have been included instead, while John Stones also makes it despite a lack of minutes this term.
Trent Alexander-Arnold also missed out at right back as Tuchel goes for Reece James and Tino Livramento, while at left back Nico O’Reilly and Djed Spence are in, but Lewis Hall and Luke Shaw miss out.
In midfield there is no room for Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Everton’s James Garner or Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. The headline news is that Jordan Henderson makes it, along with Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson and Kobbie Mainoo. There look to be only four central midfielders that will play deep, along with Jude Bellingham who will likely feature as a number 10.
Talking of which, Morgan Gibbs-White isn’t included, left at home along with Palmer and Foden, to make room for Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze. On the right wing, Bukayo Saka will be supported by Noni Madueke - who scored two Premier League goals and bagged one assist this season.
Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford are the left-wing options, with Harry Kane, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney the strikers. Toney is in having top-scored in Saudi Arabia, with 32 goals in 32 league matches.
