England vs Ghana Odds

Over 3.5 total goals

Considering his reputation for back-to-front defensive solidity, many were surprised that Thomas Tuchel’s first tournament game in charge of England saw six goals scored. But scratch the surface and the 4-2 win over Croatia starts to make sense.

The defence is an uneasy knit, with John Stones having barely featured for Manchester City this term, Reece James struggling for rhythm after a few injury-hit seasons and the excellent Nico O’Reilly still taking his Three Lions baby steps. Only Ezri Konsa provides consistency and England know-how.

Meanwhile up-top, even without the creative forces of Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, England boast one of Europe’s finest centre forwards in Harry Kane. Tuchel also has the world class Jude Bellingham at his disposal. Couple that with the direct running of Noni Madueke and Anthony Gordon - the £69m version that Barcelona see - and you’ve got a potent attacking force.

In short, this is an England side very capable of running up a hefty score, while perhaps shipping one or two goals along the way.

Both teams to score

Further to the above, I do expect both teams to get on the scoresheet in Boston. Croatia poked and prodded at England’s defensive flaws, even though they could not ride those shortcomings over the line.

Ghana have a knack for finding a goal. The Black Stars have scored in four of their last five matches. They left it late to edge past Panama in their opener, with Caleb Yirenkyi sending Ghana’s fans into raptures with a 95th minute winner.

We know the quality England have in front of goal. I don’t think the underdogs can keep them off the scoresheet. But I do see Carlos Queiroz’s men slipping one past Jordan Pickford at some point.

Harry Kane to score 2+ goals

The Bayern Munich bagsman is off the mark already, netting twice against Croatia. An initial missed penalty seems to have burned off Kane’s nerves. The re-taken spot kick following Croatia encroachment was buried with aplomb.

Kane added a second in the opening group game, to kick off his tournament. The second strike also took Kane level with ubiquitous TV charmer Gary Lineker as England’s joint-record World Cup scorer. The goal was Kane’s 10th at the global showpiece of international football.

Ghana’s defence is permissive enough to let the ex-Spurs talisman repeat his opening brace. They shipped five goals against Austria back in March. Captain Kane will be on a mission in Boston.
