Argentina

A Lionel Messi masterclass saw the 38-year-old score a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory over Algeria as Argentina got their 2026 World Cup campaign off to a flying start.

The defending champions were inspired by the former Barcelona forward in their 2022 success in Qatar, but it was open to debate as to how much Messi had left to give the nation at this stage of his career.

However, the Inter Miami man answered those doubts with a hat-trick against Algeria and Argentina will hope to repeat the trick against Austria.

La Seleccion hit 10 efforts on goal and created an expected goals total of 1.26, which suggests their opening 3-0 World Cup win was a little flattering, but it's not all about Messi.

Julian Alvarez, who enjoyed a strong campaign for Atletico Madrid this term, is pushing for a start ahead of Lautaro Martinez in attack.

Gonzalo Montiel is a doubt with a hamstring issue which may see Nahuel Molina come in at right-back.

Austria

Austria got the better of a resolute Jordan side 3-1 in their first 2026 World Cup contest and Das Team rate as a side who can grow into the competition.

Ralf Rangnick's high-tempo and pressing play may require Austria to keep something in the tank if they are to progress to the knockout rounds of the competition, but the success over Jordan gives them a platform to progress.

Xaver Schlager, Marcel Sabitzer and Romano Schmid impressed in their success over Jordan, but Rangnick has some considerations elsewhere on the pitch.

Right-back Stefan Posch may miss out with a broken jaw, with Konrad Laimer a potential replacement. Veteran forward Marko Arnautovic will be eyeing a place in attack, while Carney Chukwuemeka could come in to take the number ten role.

Argentina vs Austria Key Players:

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

He may be in the twilight of his career, but the hat-trick against Algeria indicated that Messi may have one last dance left on the international stage.

The 38-year-old has scored 12 times and assisted on seven occasions for Inter Miami in the MLS this season and the former Barcelona star has hit the net 40 times in his last 42 international appearances.

Messi is likely to be key to Argentina's chances of retaining the World Cup crown and the 38-year-old was inspirational in their success four years ago.

Marcel Sabitzer (Austria)

Sabitzer has the goal threat, creativity and experience to deliver for Austria.

The 32-year-old is a major danger if the ball drops in or around the opposition penalty area and the Borussia Dortmund midfielder has delivered five goals in his last eight appearances for Austria.

Sabitzer has the engine to cover the ground in Rangnick's high-press set-up and the 32-year-old has the ability to drive his side forward.
