England’s preparations for Euro 2024 have hardly been ideal, with injuries to key players and a defeat on home soil to Iceland slightly lowering expectations for the tournament. Gareth Southgate knows this will likely be his last tournament unless the Three Lions go all the way, and after losing the Euro 2020 final on penalties, can he go one further this time?

They’ve been placed into a group alongside Denmark, Serbia and Slovenia and you can find my Euro 2024 England prediction below, as I take a look at the squad and the latest top scorer odds.

Euro 2024 England Betting Odds

    • England to win Euro 2024 @ 4/1
    • England to win Group C @ 4/11
    • Stage of elimination - Semi-final @ 7/2
    • Team top scorer - Anthony Gordon @ 28/1

After the pain of losing to France in Qatar, Southgate has decided to stray away from his tried and tested players. Injury has forced his hand on several of these calls, and there is no doubt that Harry Maguire will be a big miss, but he has also handed opportunities to Marc Guehi, Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton, among others.

Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish will all watch from home, which just shows how different this squad is from the last World Cup just 18 months ago, but can the fresh blood take England to the next level, or will they crumble under the pressure?

Euro 2024 Odds

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale

Defence: Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, and Kyle Walker

Midfield: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo, Declan Rice and Adam Wharton

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins

England to win Euro 2024 @ 4/1

England are currently joint-favourites with France to lift the trophy, and despite the attacking talent, I just can’t see it happening this time. The preparation for the tournament has been poor, and there are two or three glaring weaknesses in this team.

Until Shaw is back fit, Trippier will have to play at left-back, which will limit England’s width, while Guehi is untested in international football at the heart of the defence. In midfield, Southgate is still searching for the right midfield partner for Rice, given Bellingham will be deployed further up the pitch. Then we have the issue of Foden, and whether he will be shoehorned into the team, or used as a wide player.

This is a team that needs three or four games to gel and work out its best XI. Even if they make it to the latter stages, surely France, Portugal, or the host nation Germany will have too much for them.

England to win Group C @ 4/11

England have been placed in a winnable group, and although Denmark pose a mighty threat, they need to win it. If they finish second then their route to glory is likely to see them face Germany, Spain, Portugal and France - whereas if they win the group, they won’t meet a major nation until the semi-finals.

I worry slightly about this team starting slowly, but Serbia is a good game to have first on paper, and then they can build from there. I wouldn’t go out of my way to back England to win the group at this price, with Denmark perhaps a more fruitful option at 4/1. However, if England have any hopes of winning the tournament, they have to start strongly.

Stage of elimination - Semi-final @ 7/2

Okay, let’s try and inject some positivity into this. England have a wealth of attacking talent and should be able to gel as the tournament progresses. Kane, Foden and Bellingham have all had fantastic seasons and they should be able to help the Three Lions into the latter stages of Euro 2024.

Using Betfred Insights’ Euro 2024 Predictor tool, England should face a relatively straightforward passage to the quarter-finals, if they win their group. There they could face Croatia, Italy or Hungary, before France await in the final four. With that incredible defence and Kylian Mbappe, I think the smart money lies on another semi-final exit.

Team top scorer - Anthony Gordon @ 28/1

Let’s try and find some value here. Kane is the obvious favourite to top score for England at 4/6, while Saka is 6/1 and Bellingham and Foden are both 7/1. However, if we are looking for value away from Kane, how about Anthony Gordon at 28/1?

If Bellingham, Foden and Kane are all involved, then England have a lot of players occupying the same number 10 space, and the team clearly needs a runner to get behind the opposition defence. For that reason, I think Gordon will find himself in the team quite quickly, or certainly be used as an option off the bench. He could even start the first game given Trippier is unlikely to offer much width from full-back. His finishing will need to be spot-on, but he has a positive mindset and will back himself to star for England this tournament. A long-shot, but one I feel offers great value.
