Coventry vs Luton Prediction: Hatters can add to Cov’s misery

Coventry City are in dire straits at this current moment in time. A 1-0 defeat at Preston last week brought more frustration, while a 1-1 draw with struggling QPR on Tuesday night saw them drop into the bottom three for the first time this season. For a club that were expected to challenge for the top six, they are falling way below their usual standards, and it means the pressure is on as they host Luton Town on Saturday (12:30, Sky Sports Football).
Meanwhile Luton are also languishing down in 19th but things have picked up lately as they beat Watford 3-0, and then narrowly lost 2-1 to the league leaders Sunderland in midweek. Now Rob Edwards will want to see his side climb the table, starting with three points at the CBS Arena. Below you will find my Coventry vs Luton prediction featuring team news and betting tips.
Team News
Coventry have played a back three in the last two games, and it feels like Mark Robins will stick with that system in order to combat Luton’s 3-4-1-2 system. It means we are likely to see Joel Latibeaudiere, Bobby Thomas and Luis Binks play at the back, with Jay Dasilva and Milan van Ewijk in the wing-back roles.
However, the Dutchman has been out of form since the switch in formation, so Tatsuhiro Sakamoto could be a more attacking option if he drops out the side. The issue with this switch is that the natural wingers such as Ephron Mason-Clark and Sakamoto don’t seem to fit, while there is still some debate on who should start up front.
Record-signing Haji Wright should play after his goal at Loftus Road, but his partner could be Ellis Simms, Brandon Thomas-Asante or Norman Bassette. Meanwhile, Victor Torp may start in place of Jack Rudoni or Josh Eccles, but options are limited in midfield.
Luton are expected to stick with the three centre-back system that sees Mark McGuinness, Daiki Hashioka and Tom Holmes lining up at the heart of the defence. Victor Moses and Alfie Doughty are clearly elite wing-backs for this level, while up front Elijah Adebayo repaid the faith of his manager with a goal in midweek.
He will be partnered with Carlton Morris, who scored in the penalty shootout when these two met in the play-off final in 2022/23. Tahith Chong and Tom Krauss both recovered from knocks to feature in midweek and should start in the centre of midfield again.
Coventry are priced at 5/4 to win this game, giving them an implied win probability of 44 per cent, with Luton available at 11/5. A draw can be backed at 12/5, over 2.5 goals is 5/6 and BTTS is 4/6. Wright is favourite to open the scoring at 9/2.
Luton to win and BTTS @ 9/2
As a Coventry fan, it’s been a chore to watch the Sky Blues of late. They don’t know their best XI, the switch in system seems to be limiting them and the lack of confidence is stark. They took the lead early on against QPR at Loftus Road and still went into their shell and threw away what would have been a vital three points.
I think Cov will score here, but ultimately fall to another defeat. Luton look like they have found another gear after the international break as they looked great against Watford, and put in a good showing despite defeat against Sunderland. Edwards is likely to turn this around and I believe the quality difference will be clear on Saturday lunchtime.
There’s huge value in backing Luton to win here, and I can’t really understand the Sky Blues are favourites given they are languishing in the bottom three and have won just two games all season. Let’s take advantage and back the Hatters to come away with three points.

Carlton Morris to score anytime @ 12/5
Morris has Premier League pedigree, but it is his experience and guile that should see him find the net at the CBS. Coventry have looked naive at the back so far and up against a front two of Adebayo and Morris they are surely going to struggle. Morris has now scored three goals in eight Championship appearances this term, but since coming back from injury he has hit a goal and an assist in his last two games.
I think he will continue his good form here with another goal, especially given I think the Hatters will score a couple at Coventry. He should be a contender for the Golden Boot this season, and he’s got some catching up to do on the likes of Borja Sainz and Josh Maja. Time for Morris to step up.
