Fiorentina are having a nightmare campaign. For context, the Viola’s only victories this season have come in the Uefa Conference League. Failing to win a single game in Serie A, the team are bottom of the table and seven points from safety. However, Thursday night (17:45 GMT, Discovery+) offers respite from their league woes, as Fiorentina welcome Dynamo Kyiv to Stadio Artemio Franchi. The Viola have six points from four games in the Conference League and can improve their chances of progression with another three points.

Dynamo Kyiv aren’t performing too well either, sitting sixth in the Ukrainian Premier League and, as it stands, struggling to reach the knockout stages of the Conference League having managed just one win so far. Fiorentina have three players who are doubts for Thursday’s Conference League clash. Former Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey has a knee issue, while Robin Gosens is struggling with a thigh injury. Jacopo Fazzini has not featured since the end of November after rolling his ankle.

The Viola’s horror run means there isn't much of a feel-good factor around the club right now, but that’s not to say the fans won’t loudly get behind their players on Thursday.

With home advantage and a break from the Serie A narrative, which could be weighing the players down, the team has an opportunity to take a step closer to the Conference League knockout stages.

Fiorentina earned a 2-0 win over Czech side Sigma Olomouc at home back in October and will be looking for a repeat against Dynamo Kyiv. The Ukrainian side won away at Kudrivka on Saturday, but before that triumph had lost five of their last six fixtures.

As Dynamo Kyiv look to discover some form and having gained an element of confidence from the last game, the Ukrainians may not be as conservative as before, which could play into the hands of a Fiorentina side boasting the attacking threat of Moise Kean, who can also call on experienced striker Edin Dzeko.

While the Viola are bottom in Italy, they have actually drawn six of their 14 matches and so aren’t the complete walkovers the league table would have you believe.

Fiorentina may be meeting Dynamo Kyiv at a good time, too, with the visitors losing six in eight, and a rare victory is more likely in Europe than Serie A right now.

It won’t be pretty, but the Italians could scrape it and take the three points on Thursday.
