West Brom vs Bristol City Prediction: Robins can call the tune

It’s three defeats in four Championship games for West Brom, who went down 1-0 at Hull on Saturday and Ryan Mason will hope for a reaction from his Baggies side when they host Bristol City at The Hawthorns on Boxing Day (15:00, Sky Sports+).

The Robins picked up an excellent 2-0 win over Middlesbrough at Ashton Gate at the weekend and Gerhard Struber are pushing for a place in the top six.

Krystian Bielik picked up an injury in the 1-0 loss against Hull and he joins Alex Mowatt on the sidelines.

There’s more bad news for the Baggies with Jayson Molumby and Jed Wallace also struggling with injuries. West Brom have appealed the red card shown to Alfie Gilchrist at the weekend.

Mark Sykes won’t play again until next month and goalkeeper Radek Vitek won’t be back until February. However, there is good news for Bristol City. George Tanner is expected to return to the squad after missing the last two league games, while Anis Mehmeti has shaken off an illness.

Defender Rob Atkinson could be handed a start after scoring from the bench against Middlesbrough last weekend.

West Brom are performing a little better than that record suggests, but Mason’s men have been inefficient in both boxes and that is limiting any progress from the Throstles.

Bristol City will have been buoyed by their 2-0 success over a strong Middlesbrough side last time out.

The triumph over Boro snapped a three-match winless run, but Struber’s side suffered narrow 1-0 defeats to Coventry and Millwall and picked up a point against Leicester on that run.

The Robins have lost only three of their 10 second-tier away matches this term and Struber’s side have been pretty solid on the road.

There’s enough in the price to chance Bristol City win at The Hawthorns, with a 1-0 away victory not ruled out at 10/1.

Bristol City have conceded only 11 goals in 1- away league matches this term and the Robins’ defence could be boosted by the return of defender Atkinson on Boxing Day.

Struber’s side have scored just 12 times at the other end, but they are a solid and robust outfit and the goals are unlikely to flow at The Hawthorns.

West Brom are the lowest home scorers amongst the Championship’s top-16 teams this term and under 2.5 goals looks a bet.
