Cardiff City have ambitions to return to the Championship at the first attempt following their relegation last term. They begin the 2025/26 League 1 campaign with a home clash against Peterborough United at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday (12:30 BST, Sky Sports Football).

The Bluebirds are being backed by many to get back to the second tier but as they are still waiting to bring in any new players, their start to the campaign could prove difficult. Read on for my Cardiff vs Peterborough predictions, supported by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy is a coach that some people are tipping for big things in the future and he has swapped Manchester City's PL2 side for the task of rebuilding the Welsh outfit.

He will have concerns given the squad he inherited endured a poor start to the season in 2024/25, and Cardiff are yet to make a signing in the transfer window, something their rivals like Luton Town and Huddersfield Town are having no issues with.

Defender Calum Chambers is suspended after being sent off on the final day last term.

Perry Ng is set to miss out due to injury, but Alex Robertson and Isaak Davies should shake off the knocks they picked up in the friendly against Notts County.

Cardiff vs Peterborough Stats

  • No team experienced BTTS on their travels more than Peterborough last season with 74% (17/23)
  • Yousef Salech bagged eight goals in 20 Championship games for Cardiff in 2024/25

Peterborough goalkeeper Alex Bass will have to wait to make his Peterborough debut after picking up a foot injury in pre-season.

This has led Peterborough to sign Vicente Reyes on loan from Norwich City until January, with the Chilean set to feature between the sticks in the Welsh capital.

Posh forked out for exciting young prospect Brandon Khela from Birmingham City this summer, and he looks set to make his competitive debut in the middle of the park.

At the top end of the pitch, Swedish forward Gustav Lindgren could be given the nod over Bradley Ihionvien to lead the visitors' attack.

Having lost top scorers Ricky-Jade Jones, Kwame Poku and Malik Mothersille this summer, boss Darren Ferguson faces a much tougher campaign than the last on paper, and some think they are at risk of relegation this year.

Cardiff vs Peterborough Odds

Cardiff are the 4/7 favourites to win this clash and they have won three of their past four home games against the Boro.

The Bluebirds drew 37% (17/46) of their league fixtures last season and the stalemate is on offer at 16/5.

Peterborough are 9/2 to come away with the three points, having triumphed in their second-last appearance here.

Both teams to score struck in 74% (17/23) of Posh's away fixtures in the third tier last term, the highest in the division. BTTS is marketed at 4/6, which has an implied probability of 60%.

Cardiff forward Yousef Salech bagged eight goals in 20 league games in 2024/25 and he is the 11/10 favourite to score anytime on Saturday - while he is the second-favourite player in the League 1 Top Scorer market, which I previewed earlier in the week.

Both teams to score @ 4/6

With it being the first game of the season, I think it's best to steer clear of a result. Cardiff have the home advantage and are among the favourites for promotion this term, but without any new additions, it is a concern with just a few weeks left of the transfer window.

Peterborough also have a huge void left by some of the attacking stars that have departed in the summer and their goal contributions are going to be tough to replace.

One thing I am confident this game can deliver is goals. As I mentioned earlier, no team experienced goals at both ends of the pitch on their travels more than Posh last term with 74% of their fixtures featuring BTTS.

They ranked second in the BTTS (home and away) last year with 70% (32/46) of their matches seeing both teams get on the scoresheet. They were very much a side that looked threatening when going forward, but extremely vulnerable at the back.

I think this will continue into 2025/26 at the Cardiff City Stadium. The hosts ranked sixth in the Championship last season for BTTS, with 57% (26/46) of their games producing goals at both ends.

It's also worth noting that six of the past seven head-to-heads between these two clubs in all competitions have featured BTTS.

It currently feels like this man is going to carry a lot of weight on his shoulders in Cardiff's quest for promotion. The Danish striker did his reputation no disservice last year with his returns in the Championship, so it is not surprising to see him get plenty of backing in the Golden Boot race.

However, the Bluebirds may struggle to keep him as there is reported interest in Salech's services and should they lose him, it would cripple their promotion chances, unless they are set for a late trolley dash in the transfer window - which they already need as it is.

As the season begins, Salech has a chance to put himself in the shop window and by scoring goals, interest can convert to bids. Despite standing at 6ft 5in, Salech is quite athletic and he poses a threat from all sorts of attacking situations.

His first taste of League 1 football comes against a side who had the worst-defensive record last term with 81 goals conceded.
