Cardiff stunned us all in midweek by picking up their very first win of the season, as they overcame Millwall with a 1-0 win in South Wales. Now they make the short trip across the border to face Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Sunday (15:00, Sky Sports+), looking to back up that success with another three points.

They remain bottom of the division for now, but could climb to within one point of safety this weekend. Below you can find my Bristol City vs Cardiff prediction as the Severnside derby takes centre stage.

Bristol City vs Cardiff Tips

  • Bristol City to win @ 7/4
  • Bristol City to win 1-0 @ 5/1

Team News

Bristol City drew 0-0 with Sheffield Wednesday in midweek and Liam Manning will be trying to inject some more attacking impetus into his side this weekend. However, he will have been impressed with their defensive showing, especially given that Rob Dickie is absent with a hamstring injury.

Football Odds

Zak Vyner partnered Luke McNally and that partnership should continue here, given Rob Atkinson is also sidelined. Fally Mayulu or Nahki Wells could replace Sinclair Armstrong up top if the manager tries to shake things up in the attacking third.

Meanwhile, Cardiff are likely to name an unchanged XI having finally got their first win of the season under their belts. They are still without Aaron Ramsey, Kion Etete and Callum O’Dowda so perhaps things will improve when they return, but Callum Robinson is expected to lead the line again, supported by Rubin Colwill.

Bristol City vs Cardiff Odds

Bristol City are the favourites to win this one, priced at 8/11 to do so, while Cardiff are available at 16/5. A draw can be backed at 5/2, over 2.5 goals is 10/11 and BTTS is priced at 5/6.

Bristol City to win to nil @ 7/4

I’m not going to get carried away with Cardiff beating a poor Millwall side 1-0 in midweek. Omer Riza is doing his best to be given the job on a permanent basis and he has made his intentions clear ever since Erol Bulut departed. However, he is still in charge of one of the worst squads in the league on paper, and when you take their current injuries into account, I’m not sure they can get anything at Ashton Gate.

The Robins may not be setting the world alight of late, but they are unbeaten at home and have picked up eight points in front of their own fans. With their attacking quality and the diversity in playing styles of their forward players I think they will cause Cardiff problems, and in truth I think they will outclass them. A narrow home win is my best bet for this one.

Bristol City to win 1-0 @ 5/1

Can Bristol City make it back-to-back clean sheets? I think they can limit Cardiff to only a couple of shots and given the Bluebirds have only scored three league goals this season so far, I think backing the home side to keep a clean sheet is sensible. I also believe we can extend our odds by backing the Robins to win 1-0.

Now, I like the likes of Armstrong and Mayulu, but the game against Wednesday on Wednesday was dull as dishwater, while their previous showing - the 1-1 draw at Swansea - wasn’t much better. Manning needs to get his side creating more chances, but that is a long process. I think they will just about get over the line here based on some solid defending. Three points will do the job for now, and so a 1-0 win has tempted me in at 5/1.
