Football Bet of the Day: Corinthians’ away travails to continue in Rio

Despite a first-half red card shown to Atletico Mineiro's Igor Rabello hampering Monday's football bet of the day, where we fell a goal short, I'm returning to Rio de Janeiro for Wednesday's football bet of the day.

This time, however, we are going to Vasco de Gama's Sao Januario for their Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A match with Corinthians (23:00), with both teams coming off the back of contrasting results on the weekend.

After narrowly avoiding relegation to Serie B last season, finishing just two points and two places above the drop zone, and starting slowly this term, Vasco appear to be moving in a more positive direction of late.

They are currently 13th in Serie A having picked up 17 points from their five 15 games, 10 of which have arrived in their last five - only Sao Paulo have amassed more (12) over the same period.

Vasco have won both games so far this month, following up a 2-0 victory over Fortaleza at home on July 4 with a 2-1 win at Internacional three days later, and they are now unbeaten in their last four at Sao Januario.

Corinthians, meanwhile, are four places and five points behind their hosts on Wednesday, with only Gremio, Atletico GO and Fluminense below them in the table.

They've won just once in the league since April 28, beating newly-promoted Vitoria 3-2 at home on July 5, losing five of their 11 games in that period.

Key to Corinthians' lowly position is their dismal away form, which has seen them fail to win on any of their eight Serie A away outings this term, claiming a paltry two points.

They've blanked in six of those matches, only managing to find the net in draws with Atletico GO (2-2) and Athletico Paranaense (1-1).

However, Corinthians will hope to lean on a remarkable head-to-head record with Vasco as they are unbeaten in their last 21 games against them since a 2-0 defeat in October 2010. Can Vasco lift the curse?

I think so, as I place more faith in this season's results than historical achievements. Corinthians have been awful away from home while Vasco should be in a confident mood, particularly at Sao Januario where only Flamengo (1-6) and Criciuma (0-4) have got the better of them this season.

Vasco's latest victory came without Dimitri Payet and Jair, highlighting the strength of their squad, and in Pablo Vegetti, they have a reliable goalscorer. Only Flamengo's Pedro (seven) has scored more in the competition this term than Vegetti (six), who has struck in his last two home games.

The 35-year-old will fancy his chances of making it three in a row on Wednesday against an opponent that has shipped at least two goals in their last three contests, and four of Corinthian's six away league defeats this season have seen over 1.5 goals scored.

Meanwhile, all four of Vasco's home wins in Serie A have seen them net at least twice, an ominous statistic for their visitors.
