Portugal head into Euro 2024 as one of the pre-tournament favourites, and they do have a much stronger squad than the one that went all the way in France eight years ago. The Lusos begin their campaign with a clash against Czech Republic on Tuesday night (20:00, BBC One) in Leipzig and they will want to get off to a strong start in Group F.

Czech Republic had a good run at Euro 2020, reaching the quarter-finals before getting knocked out by Denmark. They will be looking to create some more memories this summer, and they do have some players that can cause Portugal some problems. It is from this European contest that my football bet of the day comes.

Football Bet of the Day - Tuesday, June 18

  • #PickYourPunt Popular Builders - Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao and Tomas Soucek 1+ shots on target @ 9/2

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez and his players will want to lay down a marker in their first match of the tournament, while Czech Republic will want to show Europe once again that they are a force that shouldn't be underestimated.

They finished second in their qualifying group behind Albania, but only on goal difference. They lost just once and scored 12 goals in eight matches. Czechia will certainly feel that they can cause Portugal some problems on Tuesday night.

Now, on to the bet of the day. My selection is for Bruno Fernandes and Rafael Leao (both Portugal), as well as Tomas Soucek (Czech Republic) to have 1+ shots on target each.

I like this because I am expecting a frantic affair in Leipzig, and one that should be instigated by Portugal. The onus will be on them to impose themselves on proceedings.

Fernandes is going to be a key figure for them at the Euros and his ability to create and score goals will go a long way for Portugal. He is no stranger to trying his luck from range, and then there is his positioning to get a good chance at goal. I think the Manchester United star is going to be heavily involved in this match and I think that a few chances will come his way.

His team mate Leao is one of the brightest wingers in Europe. His pace and trickery are going to give the Czech Republic defenders headaches because rounding players is just as easy as breathing to him. Leao is going to carry a huge goal threat from the left and I'm confident that there will be a lot of activity down his side of the pitch on Tuesday.

With him being right-footed, he likes to cut inside to get an opening at goal, so I expect that he will conjure up a few chances for himself in this match as Portugal will look to dictate the tempo.

I do see Portugal coming out on top here but I do see Czech Republic having a few chances of their own. One player in particular who can have an impact in the final third is West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek. I reckon he will be given the licence to get forward and aid his team on the break, and this could see him presented with a chance at goal.

However, my greatest confidence in him hitting the target comes from his presence for set-pieces. Soucek's physique allows him to bulldoze his way in the box for corners and free-kicks so he is often able to win headers. It is here where I can envisage him hitting the target on Tuesday night.
