Football Bet of the Day: Blues can keep their unbeaten run going

Birmingham City laid down a marker in League 1 on Monday as they came from behind to beat league leaders Wrexham 3-1 at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, live on Sky Sports.

It was the Blues' best performance of the season to date and they will look to build on that when they head to Rotherham United on Saturday. It will be another tough test for Chris Davies' side, but one they will be up for. It is from this clash that my football bet of the day comes.

Football Bet of the Day - Saturday, September 21

  • Bet Builder - Birmingham or draw, Jay Stansfield anytime goalscorer and under 3.5 goals @ 4/1

Rotherham vs Birmingham Odds

The eyes of the world were on the third tier of English football on Monday for an all-American clash of ownership. You had Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds' Wrexham take on Birmingham, who are part-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady.

Birmingham came away the victors after a dominant display for much of the match, and it feels like the Blues are starting to find their rhythm. Rotherham boss Steve Evans was in attendance and speaking ahead of the game he labelled Birmingham's team as up there with the very best this division has ever seen - kind words considering we are still only in September.

He also dubbed the Blues as "Galacticos," a week after he called them "Real Birmingham." One thing for sure is that the Millers boss will have his players fired up for this clash as they will want to make the AESSEAL New York Stadium as hostile as possible for the promotion favourites, and we know that his side will be tough to beat at home anyway.

Birmingham like to dominate the play and keep the ball, so the Millers will look to disrupt them as much as possible in a bid to hand the visitors their first league defeat of the season.

Football Odds

Wrexham was dubbed as their biggest test of the season so far and they passed it with flying colours, but now I'd say this game takes the mantle as it is away from home and against another promotion rival. Rotherham haven't started as well as they would've liked in terms of points but they are improving week on week and they are unbeaten in their last three.

A victory over Blues would be huge for their own confidence, but I'm doubtful that will happen after what we saw Birmingham do to Wrexham. That being said, I know this will be one of the toughest away games Davies' men will have this season, so I'm also not overly confident that they will leave with the three points. That is why I have gone for Birmingham or draw for the first leg of this bet builder.

The second one is self-explanatory. Jay Stansfield marked his league return at Birmingham with a brace on Monday, already easing some of the pressure of his record-breaking transfer deal. He appeared to struggle in the EFL Trophy game with Walsall before that but he certainly bounced back against the Red Dragons.

I fancy him to score again because he is one of the best players in the division and his abilities in front of goal are ridiculous for the level, It says a lot that last year's League 1 Golden Boot winner Alfie May has been dropped down to the attacking midfield positions following his arrival, who himself has scored four in five in the league for the Blues.

As Birmingham tried to fend off relegation from the Championship last season, they played out a 0-0 draw with Rotherham in South Yorkshire, and Stansfield had a goal ruled out for interference. He will want to make amends this weekend, that's for sure.

This bet builder is rounded off with under 3.5 goals. I think the Millers will make this a very tough afternoon for Birmingham and five of their six appearances in the league so far have seen less than four goals scored.

The Blues have seen under 3.5 goals land in three of their five results thus far, which would suggest that we are not going to be treated to a goal-fest on Saturday. Rotherham will be tough to break down, for which Blues will need to be patient with their build-up play.

With the first leg being Birmingham or draw, I see two possibilities in the scoreline and that is either a 1-1 draw or a hard-fought 2-1 victory. Evans and his players will make this a horrible game of football for Birmingham and as a result, I think it will limit the game's chances.
