Atalanta vs Napoli Prediction: Miserable return for Mazzarri

Juventus vs Inter on Sunday is probably the obvious pick as game of the weekend in Serie A, but a fascinating encounter also awaits in Bergamo on Saturday evening (17:00) as Atalanta host Napoli.

The away side go into this one with a new - sort of - manager at the helm, with Walter Mazzarri replacing Rudi Garcia after an unsatisfactory start to the season for the reigning champions.

Mazzarri first managed Napoli between 2009-2013, leading Gli Azzurri to Coppa Italia success in 2012, and he starts his second spell in charge with a trip to the Gewiss Stadium to face an Atalanta side one point and one place behind them.

Atalanta vs Napoli Betting Tips:

  • Atalanta to win @ 13/8
  • Gianluca Scamacca to score anytime @ 2/1

Team News

Belgian forward Charles De Ketalaere is a slight doubt for Atalanta this weekend, while defensive starlet Giorgio Scalvini was forced to pull out of the Italy squad with a back problem.

The main conundrum for Mazzarri is whether to throw star striker Victor Osimhen back into the team, following a six-game injury lay-off. The Nigerian is back in training, but he may have to settle for a place on the bench - at best - as Napoli try to get him back to full fitness.

Left-back Mario Rui is also expected to miss out for the away side, who will likely field Mathias Olivera in his place.

Match Odds

Atalanta are 13/8 to win on Sunday, while a Napoli win on Mazzarri's return can be backed at 8/5. The draw is priced at 12/5.

Both teams to score is 8/13 and it's 8/11 for over 2.5 goals.

Atalanta to win @ 13/8

One win in their last four - including a 1-0 defeat to Empoli last time out- put paid to the Garcia 'era' at Napoli, and in truth, they have flattered to deceive all season.

The absence of Osimhen over the past month has been particularly painful, and although he has a chance of playing on Saturday, he's unlikely to play much, and not for a significant period.

Atalanta have lost just once at home in Serie A this season, a 2-1 reverse to top-of-the-table Inter, and Gian Piero Gasperini will fancy his side's chances of getting one over an out-of-sorts Napoli, whose decision to appoint Mazzarri raised many an eyebrow.

With so little certainty in the Napoli ranks at the moment, the 13/8 for an Atalanta win looks enticing.

Gianluca Scamacca to score anytime @ 2/1

It's no surprise to see Atalanta as one of the most prolific teams in the division, with La Dea famed for their attacking approach under Gasperini. Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata have typically led the way for them under the Italian coach but there is a new double act in town now - Ademola Lookman and Gianluca Scamacca.

Lookman bagged 13 in Serie A last season but hasn't been quite as prolific so far this term, managing just three in his 12 appearances. Instead, it's summer signing Scamacca that currently lays claim to being their top scorer, with five in nine games. That record is even more impressive when you consider he has only started four league games.

The ex-West Ham striker has already proven his prowess in big games this season, scoring versus Inter and against England at Wembley for Italy, and I fancy his chances tomorrow against an unsettled Napoli.
