Peterborough united

Last Saturday's Anytime Goalscorer Tips column was dominated by Premier League players as Arsenal's Leandro Trossard, Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo formed three parts of a fivefold.

This weekend, owing to the international fixture list, there are no Premier League players in my Anytime Goalscorer Tips. However, a couple are playing their football further down the divisions in League 1 and 2, while I've added two players in Uefa Nations League action to draw up a huge 112.85/1 fourfold, which you can check out below.

Anytime Goalscorer Tips - Saturday, October 12

  • Jonson Clarke-Harris - Peterborough vs ROTHERHAM @ 15/8
  • Alex Gilbey - MK DONS vs Port Vale @ 11/5
  • Fabian Ruiz - SPAIN vs Denmark @ 7/2
  • Aleksandar Mitrovic - SERBIA vs Switzerland @ 7/4

Jonson Clarke-Harris - Peterborough vs ROTHERHAM @ 15/8

Who doesn't like to back a striker against their old club? Jonson Clarke-Harris represented Peterborough United with distinction - for the most part - during his four-year spell at the club, which came to an end in June.

The last 12 months were difficult for the one-time Jamaica international as he was a peripheral starter and only managed nine goals in 35 League 1 appearances, significantly down on his previous league season league tallies of 26 in 2022/23 (League 1), 12 in 2021/22 (Championship) and 31 in 2020/21 (League 1).

Still, Clarke-Harris left London Road with a record of 87 goals in 190 games, two Pfa Team of the Year awards, and two League 1 Golden Boots - not bad going.

The 30-year-old joined Steve Evan's Rotherham United revolution in the summer tasked with spearheading the Millers' push for promotion, and after an awkward start for both player and club - Clarke-Harris failed to score in his first five matches and the South Yorkshire side won just once in their first seven League 1 outings - things have started to improve.

Clarke-Harris got off the mark in a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town on August 31 and now has three goals in his seven appearances, while Rotherham have won their last three games in all competitions, including their last two in the league.

A trip to London Road now lies ahead, and Clarke-Harris will be looking to make more good memories there on Saturday.

The Posh are three places and one point ahead of their visitors this weekend but have shipped seven more goals than the Millers in League 1, and only second-bottom Burton Albion (19) have conceded more than their total of 18.

Peterborough's former hero will be licking his lips at the prospect of facing a beleaguered backline, and the added motivation of netting against his former club should stand him in good stead to secure this 15/8 anytime goalscorer shot as the first part of our fourfold.

Alex Gilbey - MK DONS vs Port Vale @ 11/5

MK Dons have recovered from their 3-0 humiliation at AFC Wimbledon to embark on a four-game unbeaten run in League 2, albeit three of those matches ended in 1-1 draws.

Importantly, though, MK have scored in all four league games since blanking at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, which was the third time in five contests that they had failed to find a breakthrough.

MK have struck 13 times in League 2 so far this term, but they've tended to share the goals around rather than relying upon one player to provide the bulk.

Alex Gilbey is their top scorer with three strikes after 10 games, with his latest effort coming in a 5-1 thrashing of Harrogate Town on October 1. The 29-year-old was also an important source of goals for the club last season as only Max Dean (15) bettered his league tally of 13.

Saturday's visitors to Stadium MK, Port Vale, have enjoyed a great start to the season under Darren Moore, picking up 18 points from their first 10 matches to sit sixth heading into the weekend. The Valiants are unbeaten in their last six in League 2, four of which they have won, so they will be confident that they can take something from their trip down south.

However, Moore's side haven't been watertight at the back, keeping just two clean sheets in their last eight league games, and 12 goals conceded is the same number as their next opponents.

The hosts have the quality to hurt Port Vale's backline, and at 11/5, Gilbey takes my fancy to net anytime here.

Fabian Ruiz - SPAIN vs Denmark @ 7/2

Fabian Ruiz just can't stop scoring for Spain. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder isn't exactly renowned for his attacking prowess in France, netting just four Ligue 1 goals across his first two seasons for the Parisians, adding a further strike in the first few weeks of the 2024/25 campaign.

He's a different beast for his national team, though, as he has now scored five goals across his last 10 appearances for Spain, starting that run with an effort in a 5-1 friendly victory over Northern Ireland just before Euro 2024.

Ruiz sparkled at the tournament in Germany, scoring past Croatia and Georgia to help Spain into the final, where they defeated England 2-1. The former Napoli man was back in international action last month as Spain drew 0-0 with Serbia in Belgrade before beating Switzerland 4-1 in Geneva, where he bagged a brace.

Barcelona's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal (2/1) was a consideration in this accumulator but I just couldn't ignore Ruiz's price considering he has been scoring for Spain at a rate of every two games this calendar year.

Denmark are a solid side, evidenced by the fact they have lost just one of their 10 games in 2024 and have kept three clean sheets in their last four. Lining up with a three-man central defence, two wing-backs and two midfield enforcers in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Christian Norgaard, Denmark will look to make Spain work extremely hard to break them down in Murcia.

I can see the Danes dropping deep in a bid to tackle the trickery and pace of Yamal & co., which may shift more responsibility onto the shoulders of Ruiz, who could profit from making some late runs into the box, while his accuracy from distance could also come in handy if the visitors pack the box.

Aleksandar Mitrovic - SERBIA vs Switzerland @ 7/4

Al-Hilal striker Aleksandar Mitrovic endured a dismal Euro 2024 campaign as he failed to get on the scoresheet in Germany, with Serbia knocked out at the group stage after scoring just one goal and failing to win a game.

The 30-year-old was absent for last month's Nations League fixtures as Serbia opened up their group with a goalless draw at home to Spain before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Denmark in Copenhagen.

Mitrovic is back in the squad for this month's internationals, though, and he will be thrust back into the starting XI, particularly with Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic missing out through personal reasons.

Luka Jovic started against Spain and Denmark but has played just once for AC Milan since, a 15-minute cameo in a 3-0 victory over Lecce on September 27.

With 58 goals, Mitrovic is Serbia's all-time record goalscorer and he will be desperate to return to form for his country. This calendar year, the former Newcastle United striker only has one goal in seven national team appearances, a record he will be desperate to address.

He's been on fire for his club side Al-Hilal, bagging a match-winning brace against Al-Ahli last Saturday to bring up 10 goals for the Saudi Pro League season in just six games, and he will back himself to cause problems for Switzerland in Leskovac on Saturday.

The Swiss impressed at Euro 2024, only exiting on penalties to England in the quarter-finals, but they lost both Nations League contests last month, going down 2-0 to Denmark in Copenhagen and 4-1 at home to Spain. That's six goals conceded in two games, a worrying statistic heading into the weekend.
