Ivory Coast vs Burkina Faso Prediction: Elephants to come out on top

The reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions Ivory Coast have navigated their way through the group stage and they face Burkina Faso in the round of 16 on Tuesday (19:00 GMT, 4seven) in Marrakesh.

Team News

Ivory Coast have no fresh injury concerns to worry about as we enter the knockout stage and we are set to see a lot of key personnel restored to the XI after boss Emerse Fae rotated last time out against Gabon.

The likes of Yahia Fofana, Amad Diallo and Yan Diomande are expected to be restored to the lineup. Evann Guessand will also be hoping to start the match after coming off the bench to score in the previous game.

Football Odds

Kilian Nikiema is likely to start in goal for Burkina Faso after he replaced Herve Koffi at half-time in the last match against Sudan, with the latter suffering an injury to his right thigh.

Cyriaque Irie is also a doubt after he was removed from the same fixture with a suspected problem.

Dango Ouattara, Bertrand Traore and Pierre Landry Kabore will be expected to return as the attacking trident for the Stallions.

The Elephants have handled it well so far by going unbeaten but it still feels like they can go up a few gears as the tournament progresses. There's nothing like knockout football to spark that into action and I think they will be up for the test Burkina Faso will provide.

The Stallions did lose to Algeria but they did win their other two fixtures, so they can certainly pose problems for the Ivory Coast. I predict the Elephants will be in for a tough battle because both teams have been quite resilient and this may lead to a cagey affair.

But when it comes to players who can make the difference, Ivory Coast have more options in attack who can have a decisive impact, and I think this will help them to victory.

I have been impressed with the Stallions so far, though, so I predict that this will be a contest in which both teams score.

Manchester United's young talent Diallo had a fine start at Afcon, scoring in his side's first two group games. He was given a bit of a rest against Gabon last time out and now he will be expected to come back into the team to face Burkina Faso.

The wide man should be brimming with confidence after his bright start in Morocco and he will be eager to build on that on Tuesday in the hope of helping his country progress to the quarter-finals.

His pace and trickery can cause all sorts of problems for Burkina Faso, and I think his movement and direct runs can present him with opportunities to score more goals.
