Switzerland to beat Qatar with -1 handicap (8pm BST) @ 4/6
The 8pm game at the World Cup looks to be a relatively straightforward affair between Switzerland and Qatar in San Francisco. In the shadow of Alcatraz, both of these sides will hope to escape Group B, but Qatar are the minnows in this group.
They hosted four years ago and made it through qualifying having initially finished fourth behind Iran, Uzbekistan and United Arab Emirates, before beating the UAE to the final automatic qualifying spot in the second group phase. They only picked up 13 points out of 10, in a group including North Korea and Kyrgyzstan, so their level is extremely low.
I think Switzerland will batter them, even in tough conditions.
Colo-Colo to beat Cobresal (10:30pm BST) @ 4/5
To Chile’s top flight now, and Colo-Colo are in imperious form. They are 10 points clear at the top of the table having won 11 and lost three this season. They’ve won their last five games in a row and are scoring plenty of goals, scoring 15 goals in their last four outings.
A home game against a Cobresal outfit that sit 14th, just above the relegation zone, looks kind. The visitors have lost four of their last five and could be on for another heavy defeat.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Brazil vs Morocco - Draw (11pm BST) @ 11/4
Game of the tournament in the opening round of the World Cup? Quite possibly. Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil face Morocco in New Jersey, as the five-time winners look to get off to a belting start. I’m excited about this blockbuster clash and Morocco really are top class.
They won AFCON (eventually), and are probably the best side from the African continent, so they should deal with the warm weather well. I think a draw would suit both sides in this first game and they may cancel each other out.
Scotland to beat Haiti (2am Sunday BST) @ 1/2
Scotland get their first World Cup campaign since 1998 underway in the wee hours of Sunday morning and the pressure is on as they face group minnows Haiti. With Brazil and Morocco still to face, Steve Clarke will know the importance of landing three points in this opener, which takes place in Boston.
They should be able to beat Haiti, who will feature at their very first World Cup, and only really qualified because the big three CONCACAF nations are hosting and therefore weren’t in the qualification process. Wilson Isidor may cause problems, but Scotland really should be too strong here.
Turkey to beat Australia (5am Sunday BST) @ 8/11
If you have stayed up for all four games, well done. Hopefully you will be rewarded with a banger as Turkey face Australia in Vancouver. I will not fall into the trap of calling Turkey dark horses, but they are fancied to do well in this group, which also features USA and Paraguay.
Turkey have plenty of European experience and quality, and should just be too strong for the Aussies in this opener.
