United States vs Canada Prediction: Co-hosts to get off to winning start

The United States and Canada met in the first-ever international cricket match in 1844 and the two face off again in the first game of this year’s T20 World Cup, which is breaking new ground this year with the US as one of the host countries for the first time, alongside the West Indies, the 2010 solo hosts. 

These two neighbours have met on plenty of occasions, with the United States tending to come out on top, so Canada have a tough job on their hands if they are to open their campaign with a win. The United States look unlikely to deviate from the side that won their recent series with Bangladesh 2-1.

Canada may be lacking in match sharpness somewhat after only being able to play one of their warm-up games, where they beat Nepal.

The US are favourites at 2/5 to get the victory in this clash, with neighbours Canada trading at 19/10 for an upset success.

Aaron Johnson at 5/2 is favourite to be Canada’s top runscorer, while for the US Steven Taylor at 3/1 edges Andries Gous in the same market at 16/5.

The United States and Canada met in a recent five-game T20 series and the US demonstrated their dominance with a 4-0 win.

Canada are the lowest-ranked team in this tournament; they are 23rd in the ICC rankings and without being hosts, would have struggled to qualify.

They are entering the veteran stage with just three players under the age of 30 and they could be outclassed by this US team.

One of the only bright spots from Canada’s poor showings against the United States in their recent series was the performance of Johnson.

The batter was the only Canadian to make more than 100 runs, averaging 31. His record against the United States’ frontline bowling attack is strong, too.

The 33-year-old averages 73.5 in white-ball cricket against the hosts’ five main bowlers.

Side with Johnson to be Canada’s top scorer in this game, which looks likely to be a tough one for the Maple Leafers.
